Arbutus Elementary
Arbutus Elementary is a community of students, staff, parents,
and business partners working collaboratively to create a
shared vision for continuous school improvement. Our most
important goal is to improve student achievement, with an
emphasis on reading and math. In order to meet state and federal
guidelines we are focusing on mastery of both reading and
math skills at the primary and intermediate levels. Evening
parents workshops focus on both early literacy and math skills
as well as techniques to strengthen study skills. In addition
to workshops, identified students in grades 3 – 5 participate
in a Before School Reading and Math Tutorial Program taught
by school staff.
We strive to provide a quality instructional program, using
the Voluntary State Curriculum as our framework, in which
all students meet with success in a safe and inviting learning
environment. We continue to be committed to the goal that
all students will be reading on grade level by the end of
second grade.
The staff is committed to opportunities for collaborative
planning to maximize student achievement and the integration
of technology into the instructional program. Teachers also
utilize technology to collect and maintain data regarding
student progress. The data is then used to drive the instructional
program at each grade level.
Reading incentive programs promote leisure time reading
and involve family awareness of the focus on early literacy.
We are pleased with our partnerships with NSA and with Arbutus
Public Library. The partnership with our local public library
allows for an annual reading activity night, which also involves
parents reading with children and promotes a stronger partnership
between school and home.
