1st Grade News from Room 5
First graders in room 5 have been learning
to
decode
cvc words with short vowels /a/, /i/, and /o/. We have
read 12 Open Court decodable books. After we read
these books several times in class, we take them home and
practice them, then put them in our special "book bags" and
keep them in a safe place. At the end of the school
year, we will bring all of our books back to school to celebrate
with a special "Book Bag Day"!
We have also read some great stories in our
Hougton Mifflin Readers. We just finished a funny
story
called "Hot Fox Soup". In this story, a sly fox wanted
some chicken noodle soup, but he couldn't convince the hen
to get into his vat. He tried to get the pig and ox
to climb into his vat, but they didn't want to be in the
soup, either. When the ox tried to put the fox in the
soup, the fox changed his mind very quickly! Ask your
first grader how this silly story ended.
In math, we have learned how to add and subtract. Now
we are learning some strategies to help us to be able
to do these operations more quickly.
