Welcome to my webpage. As the
counselor here at Hernwood Elementary, I am very fortunate
to have the opportunity to work closely with the wonderful
staff, students and families at our school. I believe
in developing and maintaining relationships with all the
students at our school. My goal is to support students’ academic,
personal/social, and career needs so that they may be as
successful as possible in all areas of life. I encourage
you to contact me whenever needed. |

WHAT DOES A SCHOOL COUNSELOR DO?
The primary role of a school counselor is to help students learn
and develop to their highest potential socially, emotionally,
and academically.
School Counselors can help students with:
- Becoming successful learners.
- Making friends.
- Dealing with changes in the family.
- Getting along with others.
- Solving problems.
- Feeling good about themselves.
INDIVIDUAL COUNSELING
Individual counseling is available to ALL students in need. The
counselor works one-on-one with a student to help them resolve
problems, enhance decision-making skills, and/or build coping
skills. This is a confidential relationship and designed to be
a short-term intervention. Students can be referred for
counseling by the principal, teacher, parent, or themselves.
GROUP COUNSELING
Small group counseling is available to ALL students in need, and
may be requested by parents, students, or school staff. Parental
permission is required. Groups are designed so that students
may gather together in a confidential setting to work through
an issue that is preventing them from doing their best in school.
They have the opportunity to interact and connect with peers,
practice new skills, provide and receive feedback, and set goals
as needed.
Group topics may include:
- Friendship
- Anger Management
- Social Skills
- Grief/Loss
- Changing families/Divorce
CLASSROOM GUIDANCE
Classroom guidance lessons are provided to teach students preventative
strategies for academic, emotional, or social issues. Lessons
are designed to empower students with self-knowledge, coping
strategies, and life skills that will assist them in becoming
problem solvers, collaborative workers, and responsible citizens.
The classes are taught through a variety of methods: stories,
discussions, art work, puppets, music and role-playing.
