We are a Green School
The Maryland Green School program was developed by a diverse team of educators representing the Maryland Association for Environmental and Outdoor Education (MAEOE), Office of the Governor, the Maryland Association of Student Councils, Maryland Department of Education, Department of Natural Resources and Maryland Department of the Environment. The program is administered through the Maryland Association for Environmental and Outdoor Education. The Maryland Green Schools Award Program recognizes Maryland schools that include environmental education in the curricula, model best management practices at the school and address community environmental issues. Prettyboy currently has Green School status through 2010.
Trash Free Tuesdays
Help us reduce, reuse, and recycle every Tuesday by packing your lunch in reusable containers. Bring a lunch box instead of a brown bag. Use a thermos instead of a disposable juice box. Pack your sandwich in a container instead of a baggie. If we all work together we can reduce (or even eliminate) the amount of trash thrown away in our school cafeteria.
Terracycle Program
Prettyboy Elementary School participates in the Terracycle Program to recycle CapriSun pouches and foil-lined snack bags. Be sure to dispose of these items in the appropriate receptacle in the cafeteria. You can also bring in these items from home to be recycled.
Mid-Atlantic Clothing Recycling
Prettyboy Elementary School serves as recycling station for the Mid-Atlantic Clothing Recycling Program. According to the EPA, each year, 2,500,000,000 pounds of used clothing end up in our nation's landfills. Prettyboy Elementary School is helping by holding a MAC drive during American Education Week this November. During this week, bring in your used clothing, shoes, linens, stuffed animals, belts, and handbags to be collected and help raise money for our school!
Building Upgrades
When making improvements to our building, Prettyboy always considers the environmental impact of our actions. Most recently, we upgraded the lighbulbs in our art gallery to CFL bulbs. We will also be installing Purell Hand Sanitizer dispensers in an effort to eliminate the number of individual plastic sanitizer bottles that are thrown away each year.
Tools for Schools
The IAQ(Indoor Air Quality)Tools for Schools Program is a comprehensive resource to help schools maintain a healthy environment in school buildings by identifying, correcting, and preventing IAQ problems. Poor indoor air quality can impact the comfort and health of students and staff, which, in turn, can affect concentration, attendance, and student performance. In addition, if schools fail to respond promptly to poor IAQ, students and staff are at an increased risk of short-term health problems, such as fatigue and nausea, as well as long-term problems like asthma.Since 2008, Prettyboy Elementary School has participated in the Tools for Schools Program in order to monitor the indoor air quality of our facilities. During each school year, a team of faculty and staff tour the building in the spring and fall to assess the air quality of each room in our facility and respond to any issues that may arise.
