Be a volunteer at Prettyboy!
Prettyboy Elementary School relies on a strong, committed volunteer population. Volunteers enable our students to attendschool in an atmosphere of encouragement, support, and reflection. Many of the services and programs offered at Prettyboy would not be possible without the wonderful contributions of our volunteers. If you are interested in volunteering in the school and/or accompanying your child on field trips you MUST attend a yearly training session! Please contact the front office for information about upcoming training sessions.
Mrs. Bette Hobner, our reading specialist, offers many opportunities for parents/guardians to volunteer in the literacy program. The Literacy Department at Prettyboy Elementary offers two very specific roles for volunteers.
Reading Mentors are asked to commit to a minimum of thirty minutes per week to work individually with a kindergarten, first, or second grade student. It is a very structured program and benefits both the child and the mentor providing the service. This program will start at the beginning of November and continue until June. Different levels of training are provided throughout the year.
Book Club Leaders lead a small group of students one day a week during their lunch time. The time commitment changes per grade level. Grade 1 is usually from 1-3 weeks. Grades 2-4 are usually 4 weeks and grade 5 is five weeks. This program is designed for the children to have fun with reading. Multiple copies of individual books are provided as well as suggested questions for discussion and fun activities. This program will also begin in late October with grade 5 and continue through June with grade 1.
