Medications Absences Prevention

On this page is a consent form for the administration of certain nonprescription medications which will be available, at no charge, for all students.  This service is available to alleviate your child's minor discomforts and to avoid early dismissal from school.  These medications are approved by the Chief of School Health Services, Baltimore County Department of Health, the Coordinator, Office of Health Services, Baltimore County Public Schools.  This service helps our students improve attendance and enhances academic performance.

Parental/Custodial consent must be obtained before any medication is given to your child.  Only the Registered Nurse-School Nurse may administer these medications in accordance with established protocols.  The  consent form lists the medications which may be available.  Please complete the consent form and return it to the school nurse.  The consent is in effect for this school year only.

Approved discretionary medications are intended for occasional use only.  Whenever possible, prescribed medication should be administered outside school hours; this lessens disruption of your child's school day.

If your child requires any prescription or nonprescription medication on a regular basis, you must obtain a written order from your health care provider and supply the medications.  This information may be faxed to 410-832-5431.  The nurse will send home a Parent Consent form that must be signed for the nurse to administer the medication.  It is recommended that the first dose of medication be administered at home.  The medication must be brought to school in the original, or a duplicate container, that has been labeled by the pharmacist, with the current prescription on the container.  Instruct your child to come to the health suite at the appropriate time to take the medication and send a note to their homeroom teacher.

Medications should be delivered to the school nurse by parent/guardian.  If you have any questions or would like further information, please contact the school nurse at 410-296-2437.
