What is the mission of Gifted & Talented Education?

 

The mission of GT Education is to:

nurture potential of students.

challenge those with advanced learning capabilities.

address the needs of gifted learners across all populations.

 

 

The GT Education Program serves students who, when compared with others of their age, experiences or environment, demonstrate high potential or performance in the areas of art, English/language arts, mathematics, science, or social studies.

 

Students with advanced learning capabilities require learning experiences beyond the standard curriculum.

What are the characteristics of gifted learners?

 

The gifted learner:

 

has advanced oral and/or written language skills: expressive language.

makes unique connections; understands systems; sees the "big picture".

asks many questions; seeks in-depth information.

is nonconforming; risk-taking; independent.

has broad and varied interests, at times, simultaneously.

is resourceful at finding unique solutions.

exhibits keen powers of observation; is highly sensitive and insightful

has intense and sustained interests; transfers learning to new situations

exhibits an early moral concern; is empathetic.

makes nontraditional responses and/or products.

How are students referred for the GT Program?

 

Students are referred for the GT Program by:

 

teacher and/or parent recommendation (typically beginning at the end of 2nd grade).

test scores.

Primary Talent Development programs.

 

The GT Referral and Review Team meet to consider:

 

the student's achievement (report card grades)

observation checklists and/or learning/motivation/creativity scales (completed by the student's teachers and parents)

standardized test scores

student-initiated performances/projects

portfolio/structured performance tasks

 

* No single individual or factor determines a student's placement.

 

Finally parents are notified of the team's recommendation.
