Community:

Timber Grove is located in the northwest section of Baltimore County.  The student population is 40% white, 46% African American, 7% Asian, and 6% Hispanic.  37% of our students qualify for free or reduced meals. In addition to ethnic diversity, Timber Grove’s population reflects a mixture of urban, suburban, and rural influences. Single-family homes, town homes, and apartment complexes are all integral parts of the school community.

Students are engaged in learning that is often personalized to meet varying needs.  560 children are enrolled in regular classes.  67 students in 3rd-5th grades receive GT curriculum, 44 (8%) of students have IEPs, and 24 are ESOL students. Timber Grove Elementary has 25 classroom teachers, Pre-K – 5.  We have a full-day kindergarten program.  Special needs students are important to us.  Three teachers and two instructional assistants service children who qualify for special education services.  Ten teachers provide services in guidance, library media, art, music, physical education, vocal and instrumental music, reading, technology, and ESOL.  Over half of the teaching staff has their master’s degree or the equivalence and ten years or more of experience in education.  Other school staff includes a full time nurse, two secretaries, a building service leader and three custodians, two cafeteria employees, and four cafeteria assistants.  We also have an ESOL teacher.  A psychologist spends up to two days a week at the school.  Before and after school care and an extended day program are available at Timber Grove through outside providers.  The physical plan continues to change. There are two floors, three open space additions, and a modular with four classrooms.

Learning Opportunities:

A professional staff provides excellence in academic instruction with high expectations for student achievement.  Active learning is the focus for the instructional program, individual success is obtained through a multicultural environment, emphasizing developmentally appropriate instruction and a sensitivity to child-centered atmospheres.  All Timber Grove teachers meet highly qualified standards.  They integrate cooperative learning activities at every level to increase peer-to-peer interaction, problem solving, teamwork, and student achievement.  A school-wide positive behavior plan has been implemented. Computers are integral to our program.  We use two labs and PCs to enhance our children’s readiness for the world of technology.  Values are emphasized with a focus on helping students recognize their own worth and that of their fellow students.
