If your physician decides that it is
necessary for your child to receive medication (prescription or
over-the-counter) during the school day, a physician's order,
along with your written permission, must be provided to the school.
The permission form (Physician's Instructions for Giving Medication
in School) must be renewed annually. When medication needs to
be given at school, it is recommended that the first dose of the
medication be administered at home. The medication should be brought
into school by a parent, and should be in a container that has
been labeled by the pharmacist. The label must have the student's
name, the name of the medication, and the correct dosage.
The school nurse may administer discretionary
medications from an approved list with parental permission. Medications
included on this list are: Tylenol, throat lozenges, Benadryl,
cough drops, and Tums. These medications can only be administered
in accordance with established policies, procedures, and protocols
approved by the Chief of the School Health Program in the BCHD
and the Coordinator of the Office of Health Services in the BCPS.
The permission form (Consent for Administration of Approved Discretionary
Medications) must be renewed annually.
