Kid's Club- FLESThe WES PTA is sponsoring an after school language program for Spanish and Mandarin Chinese. The information below details a description of each class along with class requirements/age groups. Listing below does not indicate the class will be offered, but serves an informational purpose only. For specific classes being offered please view the registration form on the resources page in the PTA folder Introductory Program Spanish –opened to 1st graders; Chinese –opened to 1st & 2nd graders The Introductory Program is intended to expose young students to a new language in an enjoyable way. Using curriculum related songs, role play, games, body movements and activities, children learn a family story or tale. Each child receives an activity folder with flashcards and the lesson’s activities to take home to review. Classes begin in October and run for 10 lessons. A second 10 week Spring session may be added for Chinese based on teacher availability. As of now we are not able to offer a Spring Spanish session. The program fee is $117.50 per child per 10 week session. Participation in the Introductory Program is not a prerequisite for participation in Level I classes. Level I Spanish classes are opened to 2nd,3rd, 4th and 5th grade students. Chinese classes are open to 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students. Classes meet once a week for one hour after school. Classes begin in October and run for 26 lessons. The program fee is $235.00 per child. In this level, children learn about their lives in school and home setting. The curriculum includes: greetings, feelings, body parts, weather, calendar, colors, shapes and numbers, telling time, the classroom, family and autobiography, pets, and farm animals, alphabet, vowels and breakfast foods. Level II classes are for 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students who have completed Level I. Classes meet once a week for one hour after school. Classes begin in October and run for 26 lessons. The program fee is $235.00 per child. In this level, children increase their vocabulary and ability to express themselves and the highlight of this level is that they begin to read. They talk about preferences and describe the world around them. The curriculum builds on what was learned in Level I, and includes the seasons, prepositions, descriptive adverbs and adjectives, sports, pastimes, the parts of the house inside and out, snack and lunch foods and the zoo. More details about the FLES program can be found at the FLES website: www.fles.org For insurance purposes an additional
adult is required in the classroom at all times; therefore if you are
interested in registering your student for this program, please note
that a minimum of 2 volunteer hours per year will be required from each
family (dependent on class size). Complete registration form, sign
behavior policy and attach a check for $235 made payable to Westchester
PTA. Completed enrollment materials must be mailed to WES Kids
Club, 2400 Rockwell Avenue, Catonsville, MD 21228. They must be
postmarked no later than Friday, September 12th. Incomplete
enrollment applications (i.e. missing check, missing/incomplete forms) –
will delay your application and may result in loss of class assignment. FLES Fees: The FLES program is brought to WES via sponsorship of the WES PTA. The PTA pays FLES a yearly fee for using their program, as well as reimbursement costs to the teachers for classroom materials. An additional fee is included in each child's registration so that the program fees and materials cost can be funded by the PTA.
