On Tuesday, February 28th, Winfield Elementary School had the honor of being the only school in Maryland selected to participate in the “NEA’s Read Across America Tour - Driven by Mazda.”
In its attempt to bring the gift of reading to public school children across the country, the tour stopped at over 20 cities in the United States. This year’s guest of honor was Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax in order to promote environmental lessons and the opening of The Lorax movie. Other guests in attendance were Dr. Hairston, Baltimore County Superintendent; Abby Beytin, TABCO representative; Baltimore County Executive, Kevin Kamenetz; Matt Erwin, Mazda representative; Jason Nelson, Verity Gospel Music Group Singer; Orrester Shaw, County Council Aide; Larry Schmitz, Board of Education President; Sharonela Gregory, Assistant to the Assistant Superintendent; Natasha Eckhart, Maryland State Education Association; and Veronica Henderson
Under the direction of art teacher, Mrs. Merkle, the school lobby was decorated to display a scene from the book The Lorax, and characters of the book appeared on the stage.
Third and fourth grade students were invited to attend the celebration. The students enthusiastically recited the Reader’s Oath. Under the direction of Mr. Patterson, our instrumental music teacher, and Ms Horn, a second grade teacher; the students sang and used sign language interpretations for the song Let It Grow (Celebrate the World), a song featured at the end of the Lorax movie.
Students were treated to a sneak preview of the movie. They received Lorax stickers, bookmarks, and posters. In addition, Winfield Elementary received a complete set of Dr. Seuss books, several copies of the Lorax book for use school -wide, and a generous donation from Mazda which will be used to purchase books for the school library.
Winfield Elementary School is proud to be the recipient of the nationwide program; and proud to represent Baltimore County Schools.
