Overview of CHS…

Chesapeake High School STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Academy is a comprehensive magnet school located in Essex, Maryland. As the first STEM Academy in the state of Maryland, the mission of the school is to address the critical need to inspire, recruit, and train a larger domestic pool of technical talent, specifically focusing on better preparing students to enter science, technology, engineering and mathematics careers, with a special effort geared toward those in underrepresented groups within these fields. Chesapeake High offers eleven academic pathways within four magnet academies of study: Science, Engineering and Mathematics; Business and Information Technology; Arts, Multimedia and Communications; and Leadership and Humanities. The pathways offered within each academy are detailed in the organizational chart below.
As a dedicated magnet school, every Chesapeake student is enrolled in one of these academic pathways, which follow a four year plan for coursework including four credits each in the fields of science and mathematics. In addition, college and career planning is embedded in all pathways, through real world experiences such as learning content with industry standard technology, job shadowing and mentoring, internships/externships, and field trips. Community partnerships with Lockheed Martin, CCBC, and Building STEPS, to name just a few, have continued to provide exciting experiences and opportunities for both students and staff.
