What types of partnerships are involved with Chesapeake High School?

Chesapeake High School has worked diligently to form partnerships within industry, education, and the community.  We believe in nurturing a variety of partnerships that will enrich the programs offered, as well as the experiences of students and staff members.

Are you interested in partnering with Chesapeake?

We welcome the opportunity to collaborate about additional partnership opportunities.  Please contact Corri Perrini, STEM/Magnet Coordinator, if you are interested in discussing partnership possibilities with Chesapeake High School.

Industry Partnerships

Lockheed Martin

In September of 2007, a partnership with Lockheed Martin was officially launched at CHS.  Since that time, the partnership has blossomed.  The goal of this partnership is to link students and teachers to scientists and engineers at Lockheed Martin.

This partnership consists of multiple facets, including “Ask the Expert”, which involves students communicating with engineers about their coursework through teacher regulated email.  In addition, Lockheed engineers have visited engineering classrooms regularly to work directly with students on projects and coursework.

The “Chat and Chew” lunch meetings have also been a successful part of the partnership.  Monthly lunch meetings have allowed students to have one-to-one interactions with engineers to discuss coursework, college, and career interests in the field.

Finally, during the summers of 2008 and 2009, Lockheed Martin hosted CHS teachers for a 10 day externship.  During these 10 days, teachers spent their work day learning about various segments of Lockheed’s business - real-life lessons that they can incorporate into their lesson plans during the school year. During the externship experience, teachers will rotate through the various engineering disciplines (software, electrical, mechanical, systems and test), finance, operations and facilities, community and public relations and business development, and tour the Middle River facility and offices in Washington DC. In addition to bringing back enriched lesson plans to their classrooms, teachers also report back on their experience to their home school administration and colleagues.

Educational Partnerships

Project Lead The Way

Project Lead The Way (PLTW) is a national engineering curriculum that offers a dynamic high school program, providing students with real-world learning and hands-on experience in the field of engineering. Students interested in engineering will discover PLTW is an exciting portal into these industries.

Chesapeake High School introduced the PLTW pathway in Aerospace Science during the 2007-2008 school year.  Enrollment has grown from 21 students during the first year of implementation, to over 140 students in the current school year.  Engineering students also participate in robotics competitions in Baltimore County, and are aspiring to compete in regional and national competitions by next year.

University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC)

UMBC works in conjunction with Project Lead The Way to provide professional development opportunites for teachers of PLTW courses at Chesapeake.  In addition, once the accreditation process is complete, students in the PLTW pathway will be eligible to earn college credits from UMBC upon graduating from CHS.

Community College of Baltimore County (CCBC)

The Essex campus of CCBC has recently partnered with CHS to provide opportunities for students in the Arts, Multimedia and Communications Academy.  CCBC art instructors will visit CHS to co-teach courses with CHS art teachers, as well as host events at CCBC for students and parents.

In addition, many of the academic pathways at CHS offer opportunities for students to earn college credits that articulate to CCBC programs.  In the recent past, CHS has graduated students that went on to attend CCBC with a full year of college credit!

Building STEPS

Building STEPS is an organization that exposes high school students to science and technology-based careers, and helps them excel in these fields where minorities are underrepresented.  The multi-year program, supplementing each student’s classroom learning, includes seminars, a summer internship, college counseling and alumni services. More than 90% of Building STEPS students have advanced to college.  Building STEPS offers the exposure, guidance and support system for its students to succeed.

Chesapeake High is currently in the first year of partnership with Building STEPS, and we have 6 students enrolled in the program.

Upward Bound

Upward Bound provides support to high school students in their preparation for college entrance. The program provides opportunities for participants to succeed in their precollege performance and ultimately in their higher education pursuits.  The goal of Upward Bound is to increase the rate at which participants complete secondary education and enroll in and graduate from institutions of postsecondary education.

Currently, Chesapeake High School is in the second year of partnership with Upward Bound.  There are 3 students enrolled in the program, working with the UMBC campus.

Lutherville Laboratory Elementary School

Environmental pathway students at Chesapeake have embarked on a partnership with Lutherville Elementary School. CHS hosted 25 third grade students for a tree planting activity on the CHS campus.  Following this, Lutherville Laboratory hosted 13 CHS students and taught them how to construct reef balls, and the benefits to the Chesapeake Bay.
