Technology/School to Career/Internship

Technology Education equips students to be technologically literate. Students study, design, research, construct, and test structures, materials, and techniques commonly used in todays highly advanced industrial applications. Instruction combines informational, physical, and biological/chemical systems. These areas lay the foundational knowledge needed to be effective in a technological world and include the interdependence of mathematics, science, technology and other academic disciplines. Students will develop their critical thinking and problem solving abilities at increased levels of complexity.

TheAdvanced Technology courses within the M.O.S.T. Academy at New Town High school are geared to prepare students for a technologically advanced world. The advanced technology level course emphasizes an innovative learning environment that will introduce, illuminate and excite students to become creative problem solvers, effective communicators and life long learners who will be tomorrow's leaders.
This will happen because of a rigorous curriculum and collaborative partnerships with parents, community and industry. An example is the A+ certification program from COMPTIA in computer repair. The project-based experiences will enable students the opportunity to prepare for a plethora of secondary educational choices.

The Introductionto Engineering & Technology Concepts course is designed to complement and support the development of skills and knowledge in the areas of math (algebra), science (Physics and Chemistry) and reading. Maryland’s Voluntary State Curriculum (VSC) for Technology Education identifies five standards that serve as the basis for all technology education courses. These standards, which are based on the national Standards for Technological Literacy, identify what students should know and be able to do in order to be technologically literate. These standards are:

1. Nature of Technology
2. Technology & Society
3. Design
4. Abilities for a Technological World
5. Design World

Construction Management Program

Students in the Construction Management Program will acquire skills and practical experience to be successful in a construction career with a major focus targeting the management side of the business. Fundamental apprenticeship skills that are emphasized will be related to carpentry, plumbing, electrical, and HVAC (heating, ventilation and air conditioning). Students completing the program successfully are eligible for advanced placement in the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) Apprenticeship Program. A school to work program is available for the summer in the junior year and also during the students’ senior year.

SCHOOL TO CAREER/INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

The purpose of the school to career/internship program is for students to have an opportunity to apply academic, technical, and interpersonal skills in a work-based learning experience. This authentic application of knowledge and skill is achieved by completing a structured experience.

Our goals are to:

  • Integrate academics with work-based experience to increase student achievement.
  • Create a realistic work experience that will enable students to develop positive work ethics and values such as honesty, loyalty, and tolerance of diversity.
  • Develop lifelong learners who have the skills and knowledge base necessary to make appropriate and informed decisions in the career development process.
