Overlea High School

World Languages Department

OUR MISSION STATEMENT

Language and communication are key components in today’s society. Whether we look to the international community or to the increasingly diverse population in the United States of America, the ability to communicate in more than one language is becoming more and more essential in daily life.

World Languages study enables students to:

Offered Language – Spanish

Spanish is spoken widely through a large number of areas throughout the United States of America. It can no longer be thought of as a language spoken only in limited areas of the country. Many communities all over the USA are becoming multilingual. It is estimated that by the year 2050, 25% of the population of the USA will be Latino or Hispanic. It is for this reason that the guiding principle of world language instruction at Overlea High School is communication.

The communicative approach allows students to develop their speaking and listening skills from the first days of level one to the more advanced stages of level five.

Students learn to use Spanish in real life situations. They expand their knowledge to include learning about contributions to our lives in the USA from both Latin America and Spain. Spanish IV H and V AP include extended study that covers both literature and art, as well as language study.

Spanish I – III are standard courses.
Spanish IV is an Honors (H) course
and
Spanish V is Advanced Placement (AP).
