Dress Code

We are committed to providing a first-rate education for all students.
We want every student poised for success in college, military service and/or the workplace.

As we work to create a more positive, civil, academic-centered environment at Overlea High School, we recognize a need to clarify our dress code. The purpose of the dress code has always been:

• To prepare students for post secondary pursuits (work, college, military service)
• To insure safety at school
• To respect the dignity of every individual

The administration and faculty appreciates the cooperation of every parent and student as we begin another school year. While we realize fashion styles are varied and students express themselves through style choices, we are committed to making students aware of what constitutes appropriate attire at school and at work. Overlea’s dress code will be in effect during the school day and at school-sponsored activities unless we announce a relaxation of the dress code.  

The OHS Dress Code prohibits these items:

• All clothing and other items (jewelry, etc.) depicting/suggesting messages about drugs, alcohol, sex, violence, and/or foul language or that present either a dehumanizing message or a danger to others (including but not limited to, chains, dog collars, metal stud bracelets, pointed rings, etc.)
• Clothing that is ripped, torn or with holes
• Pajamas /sleepwear/lounge wear
• Slippers/flip flops (these pose a safety hazard)
• Leggings or leotards worn with extremely short skirts, sweaters, or jackets
• Blouses, shirts, tops worn above the waist that expose the midriff or navel
• Low-cut, revealing tops; spaghetti straps; halters; backless
• Hats, (unless required in designated technology labs, specific work situations, or for medical reasons), head wraps, visors, bandanas, sweatbands, etc.
• Sunglasses (unless approved by the school nurse for medical reasons)
• Under garments worn as outer garments
• Pants, jeans, slacks, shorts worn BELOW the waist and/or exposes any under garment
• Low cut pants that expose the lower back or buttocks
• Oversized, extremely long T-shirts

CONSEQUENCES for FAILURE TO FOLLOW SCHOOL RULES (DRESS CODE)

First Offense:

Contact parents to bring appropriate clothing. If a parent is unable to do so, we will provide appropriate substitute. Since we are unable to re-use clothing that has been worn, a small fee will be charged to replace the item. We will only be able to provide tops.

Second Offense:

If there is a second offense, we will contact parents and provide students with appropriate clothing. Students will be assigned administrative detention.

Third Offense:

For the third infraction, parents will be notified. Students will not be allowed to return to class inappropriately dressed. Students will be suspended for one day.
