NOTEBOOK
Each student will maintain a notebook of
class notes and handouts. This notebook will
contain material for the entire course. It
will be graded and evaluated in the same manner
as individual projects, but with these other
considerations:
- Notes and materials should
be in consecutive order and dated.
- If
absent, notes and materials should be obtained
from fellow student and it should be noted that
they are someone else's notes.
- If there is not a formal lesson
given that day then the activity should be recorded
for that day.
- Assignments and homework should
be noted for each day's entry.
- Specific instructions
and directions will be given. Remember to keep
all work
DO
NOT THROW AWAY ASSIGNMENTS!
MATERIALS
- At least two (2) writing
utensils (pen and pencil) - brought to class
daily.
- Notebook - type that you can easily remove and
insert pages - brought to class daily.
- Paper - line
and plain -brought to class daily.
- Safety Glasses -
required by Maryland State law - must be worn
at all times when work is being done. SEE
BELOW
- Most other materials are provided
for projects.
Maryland state law requires that all
persons working in Technology Education laboratories
must wear proper eye protection. Students are
required to provide and maintain their own approved
safety glasses. Prescription eyeglasses may meet
this requirement. The technology education department
will make available at nominal cost approved
safety glasses for students to purchase. The
safety glasses will need to be brought to class
each day.
The cost of the glasses is $3.50 per pair.
These glasses can be used in all other
technology education classes and in various
science and art classes throughout the student's
career in High School. Students can purchase
the glasses from any technology education teacher
during the school day. Exact change would be
appreciated. Make checks payable to: Overlea
High School.

questions regarding this information please ask. Do
not assume anything, as it may prove detrimental to you
during the coming school year.
Name _______________________________________ Date____________
Period_____
- Come to class on time.
Standing outside the door and rushing in after the bell
has begun to ring will constitute a tardy. You must be
INSIDE the door when it rings to be counted on time. 1
point will be deducted from your quarterly grade for every
unexcused lateness to class.
- Begin the drill as soon as you enter the room.
Drills will be on the chalkboard. Please do not wait for
me to remind you to begin since I need to take roll and
attend to other duties for the first few minutes of the
period.
- Attend to personal needs before coming to class.
I have been instructed not to give passes to lockers,
the nurse etc. , so please do not ask for a pass unless
you have a true emergency.
- Remain in your assigned seat unless you have
permission to get up.
Throw scraps away at the end of the period on your way
out.
- Do not eat candy or other food in class.
The only item allowed in Overlea classrooms is water.

Be aware of the situation since quiet talking is allowed
in some situations and speaking to the entire group without
raising your hand may be allowed in others. I will remind
you once and expect compliance.
- Use polite speech and body language.
Unkind teasing and impolite behavior is unacceptable.
- Do not cheat.
Students caught cheating will receive a zero and a phone
call home. Both the student who shares his work for an
independent assignment AND the person who copies it will
suffer the same consequences. I expect you to do your own
work and to be sure no one can copy it.

SAFETY INFORMATION
IT IS MANDATORY, BY MARYLAND STATE LAW, THAT EVERYONE
WEAR SAFETY GLASSES AT ALL TIMES WHENEVER THERE IS ANY
TYPE OF WORK ACTIVITY TAKING PLACE IN THE SHOP. ADDITIONAL
EYE SAFETY EQUIPMENT MUST BE WORN, SUCH AS A FACE SHIELD
OR COVERALL GOGGLES, WHEN PERFORMING ANY OPERATION WHERE
THERE IS THE POSSIBILITY THAT PARTICLES OF MATERIAL MAY
BECOME AIRBORNE.
Safe habits of work pay dividends in physical well
being, earning power, and productivity.
IGNORING SAFETY ONCE IS IGNORING IT ONCE TOO OFTEN.
The following safety information is good sound advice
for both in-school activities
and in your future employment.
GOOD SHOPKEEPING
Good shopkeeping is cleanliness and order, which means
clean machines, floors clear of scrap materials and debris,
prompt disposal of waste materials, and placing tools on
tool panel or in designated storage when not in use. A
clean shop is usually a safe shop. Good shopkeeping is
the responsibility of everyone. Always be on the alert
for potential safety hazards and take the necessary action
to remove such hazards. Some examples of poor shop keeping
are:
- Objects or scrap materials on the floor.
- Work benches cluttered with tools
and materials.
- Wet, greasy, or dirty floors.
- Materials protruding into aisles.
- Poorly piled or stored materials.
HAND TOOLS
Injuries from hand tools are usually caused by defective
tools; using the wrong tool for the job; and using tools
unsafe.
- Cutting tools should be sharp. A sharp tool cuts
into the material; a dull tool may slide and strike you.
- Tools with mushroomed heads are dangerous - a chip
may break off and strike you with great force.
- There
is a right and a wrong way to use every tool; learn to
use tools the right way.
- It is poor practice to carry
sharp tools in your pocket.
PORTABLE ELECTRIC HAND TOOLS
- Remember that a 110 volt electrical service can
cause a serious injury and death.
- Check the tool before
using for:
Damaged or broken insulation of electrical
cord.
Bad connections at terminals.
Broken plug.
Broken switch.
Broken wires.
Sparking brushes.
Tool properly grounded with ground wire.
- Protect
the cord from oil, hot or rough surfaces, and chemicals.
Keep the cord out of aisles or other traveled areas.
- Do not
use electrical tools where there are flammable vapors
or gases.
A spark may cause an explosion or fire.
- When through
using a tool, turn off or disconnect the current.
- Be
sure your hands are dry when using an electrical appliance.
- Grasp the plug, not the cord, to remove from the outlet.
- When not in use, cords should be rolled loosely and
placed on a shelf or hung over a round, wooden peg.
WORKING AROUND MACHINERY
- Machines should be stopped
and locked in an "off" position
before being oiled, lubricated, or adjusted.
- Clean chips
off with a brush - not with a rag or with your hands.
- Operate a machine only after you have received thorough
instructions and have been given permission
- Ask questions
if there is anything about your work that you do not
understand. To be safe you must know what you are doing,
especially when working around machinery.
- Guards are
for your protection. They should all be in place before
starting your machine.
- Wear suitable clothes. Clothes
should fir snugly. Anything that can catch in machinery
is taboo, such as neckties, loose patch pockets, wristwatches,
rings, earrings, or gloves. (long hair must be closely
covered for safety.)
- Operate only the machines to which
you are assigned.
PERSONAL PROTECTION DEVICES
- Wear safety glasses, face shield and/or goggles
when handling chemicals, drilling or routing, chipping,
grinding, using wire brush, when welding, using portable
grinder, or on any other work where there may be flying
particles.
- Wear suitable gloves or hand pads when handling
sharp, heavy, rough, or hot materials and chemicals.
- Wear a faceshield where there is danger from flying
particles.
HOW TO LIFT
- Lift with your legs to avoid back and abdominal
injuries.
- Use care in setting the load down to prevent
pinching fingers or toes.
- Lift or carry only as much
as you can handle. If the load is too heavy or bulky,
ask for help.
HANDLING MATERIALS SAFELY
- Gloves should be worn when you handle rough materials.
- Carry materials in such a way that it will not strike
someone else.
- Pile materials so they won't slip, crush,
or fall. Materials piled over 4 feet high should taper
in toward the center of the pile. Block objects that
might roll.
LADDERS
- Be sure ladder has secure footing.
- Make certain ladder
is at the correct angle (about 75 degrees) before mounting.
- Lash or otherwise secure the ladder in place.
- Face
the ladder and hold on with both hands going up or down.
- Reach only within safe limits when on ladder.
- Avoid
using any ladder with weak or damaged rails, steps, or
rungs.
- Open a stepladder fully and set both spreaders
before using it.
- Carry the ladder with the front end
high enough to clear anyone ahead of you.
HORSEPLAY
- Practical jokes and horseplay can be dangerous-any
time, any place.
- Conducting yourself in a workman like
manner does not include scuffling, pushing, wrestling,
tripping, etc.
- Horseplay with the air hose has caused
deafness, blindness, and death.
- Remember, horseplay can
work both ways. Act your age and live longer.
FIRST AID
- Don't laugh it off. Get first aid - even for a
slight injury. Infection may mean weeks of lost time
or possibly pay and even permanent impairment.
- Cuts,
bruises, scratches, burns, or punctures - no matter how
slight - should be treated immediately.
- Wash thoroughly
and whenever necessary. Soap and water are fine protection
against skin troubles.
- Do not try to remove foreign bodies
from your eye. Ask your instructor or foreman for advice
and help.
FIRE
- Report all fire hazards.
- Use metal containers for oily
waste.
- Keep fire doors and aisles clear.
- Learn where the fire-extinguishing
equipment is located and how such equipment is used.

Please read this material carefully. If you have any
questions regarding this information please ask. Do not assume
anything, as it may prove detrimental to you during the
coming school year.
