DID YOU KNOW?

Final exams are very important and constitute 15% of the final grade. If your student does not take his/her final exam in a particular course, the final grade for that course will be reduced by one letter grade. This does make the difference between passing and failing. This does make the difference between going to summer or night school or not going. Please ensure that your student is well prepared for exams and takes every final exam. Senior exams are May 14 through May 17. Senior make up final exams are May 18 and May 21 by appointment. Underclassmen exams are June 11 through June 15.

SUMMER SCHOOL INFORMATION FOR UNDERCLASSMEN

Students, who have failed a course or courses for the year, will be mailed that information along with summer school details in early June. Students who fail a course with two E’s are eligible for review course(s), which cost $150 per course. Students who fail a course with three E’s must take the course for original credit at the cost of $275 per course. Please call us for more information on summer school programs and registration. Registration and payments take place at Overlea May 01 – June 15. Late registration is June 20 th at Parkville High. Students who not make up required courses in the summer may be required to earn those credits by attending night school during the 2007-2008 school year.

UPWARD BOUND

Upward Bound is a federally funded college planning and readiness program open to potential first-generation college students, and students who qualify for free and reduced lunch. This program includes remediation, SAT preparation, summer enrichment and college visits. If you think you might like to explore this for your student, please call us.

ACT, SAT OR PLACEMENT TEST?

If a student has successfully completed Geometry and Algebra II or is currently enrolled in Algebra II, the SAT is recommended. Otherwise, we recommend the ACT. Students who take the SAT should do so in May or June of junior year and October or November of senior year. If a higher score is desired, it can also be taken in December and January of senior year. The January date is the last one that is considered by most colleges for fall admissions. And please note that only students applying to four years schools will need the SAT or ACT. Students planning to attend two-year schools like CCBC should opt to take a placement test at the school. The ACT and SAT cost around $42 and the placement tests are much less, if not free.

FEE WAIVERS AVAILABLE FOR SAT, ACT AND COLLEGE APPLICATIONS

Students who qualify for the free lunch are entitled to fee waivers for the college admissions tests and many college application fees. We receive a limited amount every year and they are distributed on a first-come basis. Stop by and see a counselor for more details.

SUMMER ENRICHMENT OPPORTUNITIES

Colleges, universities and organizations all across the country sponsor educational and cultural activities throughout the summer that may be of great interest to you and your OHS student. Everything from advanced outdoor education to advanced calculus is available somewhere this summer. Call any of the local colleges for more information.
