Model UN Competition
We have just returned today from the Model UN competition and conference. For the second year in a row, Overlea has dominated the field in the Position Paper writing competition, placing 2nd and 3rd in the award category. Repeating our performance from last year, our students placed in the top 3 and also placed 4 of our papers in the final 8.
Sarah K. representing the United Kingdom placed 2nd and Kamala H. (author ) and Keziah B. placed 3rd representing Indonesia. This was out of over 40 Position Papers from 9 different schools.
Additional recognition was given to OHS students Will E., Kalabe H. and Aaron M. ( best delegation - honorable mention ) representing Venezuela and Eric S. ( best speaker - honorable mention ) representing Afghanistan. Both of these awards would have been a first or second place finish as voted on by their peers, but as the key participants (Will E., Kamala H. and Eric S.) were all juniors, they were only eligible for the honorable mention standing. The awarding of an honorable mention award is new and was determined by votes from the other students as well as input from the Secretariat of the UN ( Dr. Allison McCartney - TU). Dr. McCartney was so impressed by their respective performances, that she insisted on an honorable mention award for them.
These performances clearly illustrate the commitment of our AP students and the progress the AP program is making at Overlea. We have once again met the 'elite' of BCPS and left the field a dominant victor. If you see any of the above students, please congratulate them on a job well done.

Soldiers in Iraq receive cards from OHS students
The career and technology education department has had a very busy second quarter. Students in Mr. Callas’s class utilized their desktop publishing and printing skills and Mrs. Ranieri's students used their artistic talents to cheer up our service members who are serving in Iraq. Students designed and printed holiday cards which were mailed to Kirkuk Airbase in northern Iraq, the airmen who received the holiday cards were most appreciative of the support shown by Overlea's students.

Mr. Callas' students individually tutored the Life Skills students on designing, writing, and proofreading digital portfolios utilizing presentation software.

The next project will be another collaborative effort as both groups of students will produce class memory books. This will give Mr. Callas's students an opportunity to show off their production printing skills while providing Mrs. Ranieri's students an opportunity to learn about digital printing and production.

Overlea's MCJROTC sponsors Adopt-A-Highway
The Overlea High School JROTC has volunteer its services to the community by adopting-a-highway for the school year 2007-2008. They have put a sign up with our names on it designating our area of responsibility. We have the highway from 95 Crossroads to Bird River Road. My cadets and I will go out at least four times this school year to police up (clean-up) and maintain the area. Ms. Parker wanted you to know to include on our school website and maybe an article in the next school newspaper. Attached are some photos that you can use to include on the website. Please include the photo of the sign that says "Overlea High School MCJROTC Adopt-A-Highway" for the website, thanks. If you have any questions, please feel free to let me know. Thanks, again.

Forest Buffer Restoration Project
Hello Ms. Parker
Overlea High School students and their teacher Karen Kracker took part in the BCPS Forest Buffer Restoration Project. Your students planted 75 native trees and shrubs at Fleming Park. I just want to make sure you are aware of what a great job the students did, they were unbelievable. They worked together as highly organized teams and got the job done with incredible spirit and drive. I really enjoyed working with them; they were so polite and helpful. You are lucky to have such delightful students at your school and I am looking forward to working with them in the fall to perform maintenance on their trees.
Thanks again for such great students and teachers.

Second best in the entire state is quite an accomplishment.
Congratulations on a job well done!
To put their accomplishments in perspective, two students from one class of eleven students at Overlea High School won the same amount of medals as did Carroll County, Cecil County, Western School of Technology and Easton High School. They won more medals than seven other High Schools or Technical Centers entering the competition. SkillsUSA is the largest student organization in the United States with more than 284,000 student and instructors join SkillsUSA annually, organized into more than 14,700 sections and 54 state and territorial associations. Wayne Becker and his proud employer celebrate winning the silver medal.
Overlea Graduate Wins Silver Medal in HVAC National Competition
Wayne Becker wins the Silver Medal at the ABC National Craft Championships Competitors, held at the association’s 2007 national convention March 21-25 in Nashville, Tenn. Wayne is a 2002 graduate from Mr. Roberts’ HVAC Class and has continued his career with Maryland Mechanical Services. Wayne is finishing his final year as a HVAC apprentice and represented the Baltimore Chapter of the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC). He also has continued to work part time for Mr. Roberts in his HVAC business. A field of 130 craft professionals competed in 13 different craft areas during ABC’s 2007 National Craft Championships competition.
The National Craft Championships is the highlight of ABC’s National Convention. ABC’s National Chairman Dave Meyer said “Each year, we are honored to provide these craft professionals with the opportunity to demonstrate their high-quality workmanship, technical knowledge and safe work practices. These craft professionals are the best-of-the-best and show us that there is a bright future ahead for ABC and the U.S. construction industry.” The National Craft Championships was developed in 1987 to help celebrate and recognize craft training in construction careers. Each year, the competition draws some of the nation’s most talented craftspeople and highlights the important role that craft skills training plays in the construction industry. The National Craft Championships Committee, which is composed of leading merit shop construction firms, plans all year for the two-day competition. Wayne was among the first graduates to complete the newly formed HVAC program offered at Overlea. He was the best HVAC students in his graduating class. His desire to learn the correct way and always complete his job with pride distinguished him as an exceptional craftsman during his high school years and continues to prove valuable in his apprenticeship years. When Wayne completed a project, and some small items could have been done better, he never offered excused, he just went about fixing any part of his system that could be improved. This attribute has worked well for Wayne in his career as demonstrated at the National level by being the second best apprentice in the United States. Congratulations Wayne!
