Phase 2:

Phase 3:

This task is designed for you to use your ingenious skills of perimeter and area to design a house and determine measurements and costs based on your floor plan.  This will be a major part of your grade!

You will be:

*       Designing a floor plan.

*       Calculating square footage, surface area, and other measurements in order to complete your home.

*       Answering analysis questions based on the floor plan you created.

Phase 1: Design The House

Phase 2:  Overall Dimensions

Phase 3:  The Outside of Your Home

Phase 4:  The Inside of Your Home

Design The House

*       You will begin by designing a rancher-styled home (one-level) that includes a minimum of 3 bedrooms (with closets), 2 baths, one living room, dining room (may also be part of an eat-in kitchen), and one kitchen, a laundry/utility room (or closet) .  Keep in mind, these are minimums... you are free to add other design components to your home.

*       You will be drawing the walls and labeling each room.  You will need to include essentials such as windows and doors.  Some furnishing such as: kitchen and baths must be included, however; others are optional.

Design My House!

  • Save your floor plan as you work.  When you  have finished your floor plan, be sure to print a copy!   (This is what you will be turning in!). You will also be submitting your saved design code to your teacher so that she may view your home online as well.

  • Note:  You may choose to build your house to suit a "client" (you'll know what I mean when you visit the site), or you may choose to just design it to suit yourself (in which case just pick a person and ignore them!)

Overall Dimensions

*       Determine the square footage of your home.

*       If cement for a foundation costs approximately $3.00 per square foot, what will be the cost of foundation for your home?

The Outside of Your Home

 Gutters:

*       Gutters must be placed around the outside of your home.  Determine the amount of linear feet of gutters you will need.

*       Choose your gutters at: Go Buy Gutters!

*       Print out a picture of the gutters you chose.  In order to get credit for this calculation, the print out must include the length the gutters come in and the cost!

*       Calculate the cost of gutters for your home.

Siding:

*       Before you can calculate the amount of siding you will need, you will need to determine the height you would like your home to be.  Keeping in mind that your home is one level, determine an appropriate height for your one level home. (Note:  If you do not list your height here, you will not earn credit for any of the siding questions below!)

*       Calculate the amount of siding needed for your home.  Be sure to show each measurement: front, left side, right side, and back of home.

*       Choose a type of siding to use.  Get Your Siding Here!

*       Be sure to print out a picture of the siding you chose and list the cost.

*       Calculate the total cost of your siding.

Grass:

*       You would like to have a nice green yard.  Choose your grass from the website:  Get a Green Yard!

*       Your lot (term for “piece of land”) is 8000 square feet.  Determine the square footage of your yard (not including your home.

*       Print out a picture of your grass.  Be sure the print out includes the cost and coverage of the grass.  Determine the cost for the grass.  Show your calculations.

The Inside of Your Home

*       Choose one room in your home with an area larger than 144 square feet to use for this section.  Which room will you be using?

*       Base Moulding

*       You will need to place base moulding in this room.  This goes around the perimeter of the room.  Calculate the perimeter of the room.

*       Choose your base moulding from the website:  That's some nice mould right there!

*       Be sure to print out a picture of the base moulding you choose.  Remember, to get credit your print out must list the length the base moulding comes in as well as its cost.

*       Keep in mind that you don't want to have a bunch of pieced together sections in your room - it would look sloppy.  Without purchasing way too much, about how many sections of base moulding should you purchase?  What will that cost be?

*       Paint

*       You would like to paint this room.  Determine how many square feet you will be painting.

*       Using the website:  Some nice paint knowledge for you...

Determine how many gallons of paint you will need for this room.

*       This paint is sold at Lowe's for $28.98 per gallon or $108.00 for a five gallon bucket.  Which should you purchase for your room and why?

You're finished!  You will be graded on the quality and clarity of your work.  All layouts, print outs, calculations, and conclusions should be evident in your work.  You should submit your final product including all the pieces from each phase.
