SPHS launches online, interactive newspaper
The journalism class invites parents, and students to visit the new online newspaper, The Pointer, at www.sphspointer.com.
The journalism class is very excited about what they have put together so far, and they hope students, parents, and faculty will enjoy viewing the photos and videos, and reading the stories and commentaries and creative writing on this site.
The site allows the readers to interact with it by voting in opinion polls, offering comments, and registering to receive e-mail updates whenever new stories are posted.
The site is a work in progress and a learning tool for the journalism class. All but one of the nine class members are first-year journalism students. The editor, third-year journalism student Bethany Albritton, has done quite a lot of work to get the site to the point where it can be shared with the school community and the general public. The whole class has contributed in various ways to its creation. David Taylor is the journalism teacher.
Parents are asked to support the journalism program by visiting the site and giving helpful input. The journalism class welcomes comments and suggestions t help them learn and improve their product; they also welcome ideas for topics.
Since this site is intended to be interactive, the class also welcomes writing by students who are not part of the journalism class. All students are invited to submit opinion articles about school-related or teen-related topics and letters to the editor. For the creative writing section of the site, students are also invited to submit original creative work, such as fictional stories, poems, and personal narratives. Submissions of opinions pieces and creative writing should be sent to dtaylor@bcps.org.
Plagiarism is something that we want to address here at Sparrows Point High School. Ms. Brown of the SPHS English department has created this PowerPoint presentation to inform both parents and teachers about this important issue.
"This [plagiarism] is NOT just a moral issue. Plagiarism can have serious consequences in the academic and working world."
-Ms. Allison Brown
