DEPARTMENT ORGANIZATION

The School Counseling Department is organized to provide services effectively to all families in our school community. If a student's last name begins with the letters A through K, Mr. Muller is his or her counselor. If a student's last name begins with the letters L through Z, Ms. Theis is his or her counselor. If a student is identified as a Maryland’s Tomorrow student, Ms. Peters and Ms. Grimes are his or her counselor. We are paired with the assistant principals to work as teams in helping all students meet with success. Please call us at any time at 410-887-7519.

COLLEGECOUNSELOR

Amy Jubb. Ms. Jubb will be available every “A” day to provide college counseling and guidance to students and families. Please call her at 410-887-7519 to make an appointment for any and all your college planning needs.

PSAT RESULTS

PSAT results were returned to all students in December through English classes. Counselors helped students interpret their results and answered all student questions about the test results. Students also received test booklets and an interpretation guide to help make sense of the scores. If you would like to meet with the appropriate counselor about the PSAT results, please call us at 410-887-7519.

STUDENT ATHLETE RECRUITING RESOURCE

The athletic department at Sparrows Point High has subscribed to a student athlete recruiting resource for students, coaches, counselors and families at dynamitesports.com. The programs on the site aim to equip coaches, counselors, parents, and student-athletes for college athletics and the recruiting process. The program also consists of a hard copy version that includes a 390-page reference manual, and an interactive companion CD that allows you to use the program without being online. Both are available in the school counseling office. The two parent and student sites are http://www.counselorscurriculum.com/ and http://www.dynamitesports.com/. The username is pointathletics and the password is pointpride. Please use these to access the sites. You can also find a link through the SPHS website at http://sparrowspoinths.bcps.org/Activities/index.htm#SPORTS

SELECTIVE SERVICE REGISTRATION

The law indicates that all 18 year-old men must register with the Selective Service System. Men complete registration by visiting the Selective Service web site at www.sss.gov. By registering, you add your name to the list of all men in the nation ages 18 – 25. This list would be used to identify men for possible military service in the case of a national emergency. Failure to register could possibly result in fines and imprisonment. In addition, if you do not register, you cannot qualify for federal student grants/loans for college, job training benefits and many state and federal jobs. Information is available in the school counseling office.

ATTENDANCE MATTERS

Our goal is to complete the year with an overall average daily attendance rate of 94%, which is the state standard for satisfactory attendance. As of this writing, our overall average daily attendance rate is 93.8%. Last year at this time, our overall average daily attendance rate was 94.0%. Students who attend every day get better grades and pass their HSAs required for graduation. We can’t teach the students and students can’t learn if they are not here. Thank you parents for being such an outstanding part of our attendance improvement efforts. Better attendance DOES result in better grades and better HSA performance.

COLLEGE PLANS AND FINAL TRANSCRIPTS

When your senior decides on a post secondary plan, whether involves the military, a trade school, a community college or a 4-year college, please inform Ms. Langis in the school counseling office. We would like to add your student’s name to our bulletin board to show the faculty and underclassmen his/her plans. Also, if your student’s college requires a final transcript, make sure you request that from Ms. Langis before graduation. Final transcripts are available by July 1 and can be mailed shortly thereafter.

STUDENT SERVICE LEARNING HOURS

SSL hours are a requirement for graduation and must be completed before receiving your diploma. SSL projects completed in the community must be documented using the Individual Project Approval Form available in the school counseling office. Please call Ms. Langis at 410-887-7519 with any questions or concerns.

FEE WAIVERS AVAILABLE FOR SAT, ACT AND COLLEGE APPLICATIONS

Students who qualify for the free lunch are entitled to fee waivers for the college admissions tests and many college application fees. We receive a limited amount every year and they are distributed on a first-come basis. Stop by and see a counselor for more details. UPWARD BOUND Upward Bound is a federally funded college planning and readiness program open to potential first-generation college students, and students who qualify for free and reduced lunch. This program includes remediation, SAT preparation, summer enrichment and college visits. If you think you might like to explore this for your student, please call us.
