WJZ's Black History Oratory Contest (posted 2/25/08/01/2008)
Congratulations Arielle! As part of WJZ's Continuing Community Commitment, high schoolers from across our area came together Sunday to showcase their many talents. 20 semi-finalists participated in WJZ's Black History Oratory Contest, which was hosted by Kai Jackson. Arielle H., a junior at Western School of Technology and Environmental Science, was the 3rd place winner.

The Winter Sports Banquet will be held on Monday March 10, 2008 at the Town and Country Banquet Hall.

AP Test Registration (posted 2/24/2008)
Registration for Advanced Placement Exams must be completed by February 29, 2008. The following is a list of important steps and deadlines in the registration procsess:

  • A non-refundable total fee of $84 will be charged for each AP exam. Please make checks out to Western School of Technology. A fee reduction per exam is available for students with acute financial need. Students who are on free or reduced lunch or who receive state medical assistance should see Ms. Tavernia in the Guidance Office. These waivers are available on a first come first serve basis.
  • A non-refundable deposit of $42 per exam is due on February 29th with the Registration Form. The remaining balance of $42 per exam is due on March 14th.
  • Students need to complete the registration form and return it to Ms. Tavernia by February 29th. The registration form must include a non-refundable $42 deposit for each AP exam.
  • Any questions concerning registering for the AP exams should be directed to Ms Tavernia in the guidance office at 410-887-0842 or at atavernia@bcps.org.

HSA Testing (posted 1/04/08)

National Archery in the Schools Program (posted 11/05/2007)
Western has been named the Baltimore County representative for the National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP). NASP is a joint venture between state departments of education and wildlife. The program promotes student education and participation in the life long sport of archery. Western has an archery club team that meets and shoots two days a week after school. As of October 25th, the Wolverine archery team has qualified for the state tournament to be held in the spring of 2008! Leading scorers at this time are Evan V. and Jennifer P.

2007 Fall Sports Awards Banquet (posted 10/30/2007)
This event, which runs over two days: Monday, November 19 and Tuesday, November 20, gives Western a chance to recognize the achievements of our student athletes and applaud those long hours on the field and on the court. Tickets will be available in the cafeteria during each lunch shift from November 6th - November 15th at the cost of $14.00 per ticket. HSA Results Reported - Western Scores Are Impressive (posted 09/12/2007)
Baltimore County released school-by-school results earlier this month for the Class of 2009 - the first group of students that must pass the statewide High School Assessments in algebra, English, biology and government to receive a diploma. Students in the Class of 2009 at Western School of Technology and Environmental Science scored high. Of the students that were tested, more than 91 percent passed all four tests. After-Prom Party tickets will be on sale in the cafeteria from Monday, April 30th through Friday, May 11th. The sale hours are 7:00-7:30am and 10:30-11:30am. Only seniors with a valid Student ID are eligible to buy these tickets, which cost $10 each or $15 for a couple.

BCPS recently recognized Western for Significant Achievement in the H.S.A. Student Proficiency Rates for 2005-2006.

The Maryland State Board of Education recognized Western for Outstanding Performance on the 2006 Maryland School Assessments.

Keep The Drive (posted 10/18/2007)
Agnes V. a student at Western School of Technology was chosen to help lead Keep the Drive, a national teen-to-teen smart driving movement to reduce the number of teens killed or injured in motor vehicle crashes. Keep the Drive is a project of the Allstate Foundation Teen Driving Program. Agnes and 44 other teens from throughout the nation attended the third annual Keep the Drive U.S.A. summit in Chicago.
