What is Peer Mediation?

Peer mediation is an empowering problem solving process that has been adopted by schools nationwide to reduce violence and provide students with skills to effectively deal with conflicts and stresses associated with it. Cockeysville Middle School has successfully participated in the peer mediation program for 8 years. Peer mediation is designed to assist students in the resolution of conflicts though open communication and creative problem solving. The process of peer mediation gives students an opportunity to learn and utilize essential life skills, including active listening, communicating feelings, empathy, and creative problem solving. As students learn to manage conflict in a constructive way, they can begin to better understand the value of cooperation, which can have a positive influence on individual confidence and self-esteem as they mature.
