Introduction=

Coc= keysvilleR= 17;s band program is a comprehensive program that performs at the highest conceivable level of quality.

In band we are in an evolutionary process. Our philosoph= y is simple: NO MATTER HOW GOOD YOU ARE, YOU CAN ALWAYS IMPROVE. My primary goal as the director is to prepare EVERY band student musician to appreciate music as a performer and listener. In order to reach this go= al, I will do everything in my power to help students develop adequate music= al skills and promote growth in musical understanding and appreciation. In accordance with this goal, instrumental music is taught so as to develop in EVERY student:

Rehearsal Procedures for Band

To develop a standard of excellence in our program, the following procedures are to be established to maintain discipline, pride, a= nd cooperation from all members.

Arrive to class/rehearsals on time with everything you need (instrument, fold= er, supplies, method book, music, etc.). School lateness policies will be fully enforced.

Get your music and instrument in a quick and orderly manner and be seated immediately. Adjust your chair and stand so that you can see the music= as well as the conductor.

Sit with good posture (both feet flat on the floor, legs uncrossed, back straight, and up on the edge of your seat).

Do not eat, drink, or chew gum when you play.

Warm up your instrument quietly by sustaining long tones in the middle/low register. Talking should be minimal.

When the conductor’s foot touches the podium, you immediately stop playing and focus 100% attention on him/her to hear any directions.

NEVER touch anyone else’s instrument or music unless directed to do so= by the director. This includes the classroom as well as the storage rooms= . This is for your own safety.

At the end of rehearsals, put your seat back where it was as neatly as possible and clean up any trash near you.

Arrive at your next class on time.

Your instrument must be kept in the storage location assigned to you. Your = folder may be kept with your instrument or with your binders, but remember it= is always your responsibility to bring it with you to class. Your case= MUST be labeled with your name!

Your instrument must be taken home to fulfill the required amount of practi= ce. Students who play large instruments may make arrangements with the director to practice after school to avoid carrying the large instrument home.

Band Program Format

In band, unlike ANY other subject, we work together constantly towards the same goals. If any individual in the band has any weaknesses in their knowledge or skill ability, the entire group suffers. T= hat is why home practice and full attention in class is so critical. The band program consists of the following ensembles:

6^th Grade Band – Classes are broken down by instrument as much as possible. You are placed in one of four classes that meet 5 times over every 2-week period.

   &n= bsp;        Woodwind 6: flutes, oboes, and all saxophones

   &n= bsp;        Clarinet 6: clarinets and bass clarinets

   &n= bsp;        Brass 6: trumpets, french horns, trombones, baritones, and tubas

   &n= bsp;        Percussion 6: instruction given on all percussion instruments

Wind players will be using Essential Elements 2000 Book 1 as their primary band method boo= k. Percussion will be using the Roy Burns Elementary Drum Method and A Fresh Approac= h to Mallet Percussion.

It is expect= ed that by the end of 6^th Grade, band members can successfully perform a minimum of Level I music as defined by the Maryland Band Director’s Association.

7^th Grade Band – Classes are broken down into three sections. You are placed in one of the following cla= sses that meet 5 times over every 2-week period.

   &n= bsp;        Woodwind 7: flutes, oboes, clarinets, alto saxophones and french horns

   &n= bsp;        Brass 7: trumpets, trombones, baritones, tubas, bass clarinets, tenor and baritone sax

8^th Grade Wind and percussion players will no= t be primarily playing out of a method book, but will focus more on the literatu= re to be performed at concerts as well as the required Baltimore County Middle School Band Assessments in March.

It is expected that by the end of 8^th Grade, band members can successf= ully perform a minimum of Level III music as defined by the Maryland Band Director’s Association.

Winds of Cockeysville – Our highly competitive after school honor band program open through audition only. Members are chosen based not only on their musical abilities, but also on t= heir dedication to their studies in all subjects and their commitment, responsibility, and dedication to the success of the band program. WOC perf= orms the highest quality literature and represents the school in music festivals= in and out of state. WOC rehearses once a week after school as a full ensemble= and several times a week in sectionals on a rotating basis. <= /h5>

Jazz Band – Another after school program w= hich focuses on quality jazz literature as well as the styles and techniques necessary to perform in a jazz band. The members are selected based on their WOC auditions and must be members of WOC in order to perform in Jazz Band. = Jazz Band performs both in and outside of the school community including hospita= ls, senior centers, elementary schools, etc. Jazz Band also rehearses once a we= ek after school.

In all of our ensembles, emphasis is on developing = top musicianship through practice in ensemble technique, musical skill, and sty= le. We perform only quality literature of many genres.

Band = Requirements

=

Band is a commit= ment of time, money, and emotion. Students need to develop a sense of responsibility and perseverance as well as a sense of teamwork and one-ness. Students invo= lved in band are making a primary commitment for the entire school year. We recognize the importance in the student’s lives of extra-curricular events such as sports, dance, scouts, drama, etc. but the student’s curricular commitments must be primary. Students who have an unexcused abse= nce from a concert or critical rehearsal can no longer be considered performing members of the ensemble.

Conce= rts Attendance, Behavior, and Dress code

Band is a performance based class and as a result will perform concerts at appropriate times throughout the year. Attendance at concerts is mandatory and a large part of the overall quarterly grade. Remember, a band is a team and without every member that team cannot and wi= ll not be successful. A big part of that teamwork is being able to count on ea= ch other. Each member should be fully prepared for each concert. A calenda= r of the concerts and other music events can be found at the end of this manual.=

Excu= sable absences include illness or family emergency. A note will be required upon returning to school. <= /span>Unexcused absences include= : lack of transportation, forgetting, SPORTS EVENTS, etc. Remember, a concert is a school function which takes precedence over ANY sporting event outside of school. Please do not schedule vac= ations when a concert takes place as this will NOT be considered an excused absenc= e. An unexcused absence will lower the report card grade 2 letters for that quarter.

The goal of concert dress is to focus attention on = the performing group as a whole without any visual distractions and should be appropriate for the setting. It also aids in promoting team spirit.

Ladies: White long sleeve blouse/dress shirt, black ankle length skirt/dress pants, dark shoes and socks

Gentlemen: White long sleeve dress shirt, black dress pants, dark shoes = and socks, and a dark necktie.

WOC: Same as above except it must include the black cummerbund, bowtie/rosette and black jacket (gentlemen only).

Concert etiqu= ette dictates that no one (performers or audience) should enter or leave the performance area while a performance in progress. This creates a distraction for the conductor and performers. In addition, flash photography should nev= er be used while a group is performing. So that all may enjoy the concert, the= re should be no talking, eating, drinking while the performance is in progress= . We also ask that cell phones/pagers be turned off or placed on “vibrate” and any necessary calls be taken out to the hallway. Please also escort any screaming children/infants to the hallway as quickly= as possible to minimize disruption. Finally, etiquette also dictates that no performer should leave the concert early, even if they are finished early. = This is EXTREMELY disrespectful to the students who have not yet performed.=

Class= es and Full Rehearsals

=

Students must be prepared for all classes and full rehearsals. You must have your instrument= in good working order (lubricated valves, slides, keys, and corks; and at leas= t 2 good working reeds), music folder, and a PENCIL every day. Instruments shou= ld go home as often as possible to promote as much practice as possible and for security reasons.

A =3D 90-100%     B =3D 80-89%       C =3D= 70-79%       D =3D= 60-69%       E =3D= 59% or lower

Grades are broken down as follows for each quarter: (subject to change)

20% Classwork* (effort, participation, playing abil= ity, playing quizzes, attitude)

10% Care and maintenance of instrument (Check-ups w= ill take place throughout the year)

30% Home practice time

10% Bringing all required instruments/materials to = class

20% Attendance at all concerts and full rehearsals<= /p>
10% Behavior

*It should be no= ted that playing ability is not a large determining factor in the classwork portion = due to the differing abilities of the band members.

Participation in= extra activities such as auditioning for the Baltimore All County Middle School B= and, Maryland All-State Junior High Band, participating in the County/State Solo= and Ensemble Festivals, Summer Music Festival, etc. will not only increase your playing ability and musical appreciation, but will add points to your quart= erly grade.

Attitude: the si= ngle greatest factor that determines the success of any individual        =             &nb= sp;            =    (in general, an “A” student shows positive leadership and interest in assisting rehearsal success; he/she shows independence and resourcefulness in assisting rehearsal procedures; he/she is self-disciplin= ed, punctual, dependable, and cooperative; he/she has outstanding progress in self-improvement through constant individual practice and ensemble participation; and he/she cares deeply, wants to succeed, and demonstrates = this through quality work.)

Students will be responsible for maintaining and caring for their instrument and supplies. T= his includes cleaning the instrument, oiling valves, replacing broken reeds, et= c. Check-ups will be held periodically throughout the school year and grades w= ill be lowered if a student is clearly neglecting his/her instrument or supplie= s.

If a student fai= ls to bring his/her instrument to class, an “NI” will be placed in the grade book. Each “NI” will subtract a point from that portion of the student’s overall grade. An excess of “NI’s” may result in any of the following: phone call home, written assignment, detent= ion, removal from upcoming performances.

Home Practice Ti= me: Your grade is based on how many minutes you practice during each quarter. The requirements are as follows:

            6^th Grade: 90 Minutes Per week

            7^th Grade: 105 Minutes Per week

            8^th Grade: 120 Minutes Per week

Practice logs wi= ll be given out and must be kept in your folder at all times. Logs should be upda= ted after every practice session and signed weekly by a parent/guardian. The lo= gs will be recorded in the grade book ONCE A WEEK. If the logs are not filled out or signed, NO credit will be given. PLEASE STAY ON TOP OF THIS AT ALL TIMES. It may be advisable to keep 2 logs, one at home and one in the folder just in case one of them gets lost, stole= n, or destroyed.

How/W= hat To Practice

=

Pract= ice does not make perfect! Perfect practice makes perfect!

If yo= u make the same mistake over and over, you will make it harder to correct AND you will= be able to play it WRONGER than anybody else!!!

Remem= ber, DON’T DO IT OVER AND OVER, DO IT BETTER AND BETTER!

=

As students adva= nce in musical study, the regularity and quality of their practice increases in importance. This can be promoted if parents see that students have favorable practice conditions. Students should have a music stand and a comfortable p= lace to practice.

1.      = Schedule regular times to practice that best f= its your schedule. As long as you have the required amount of practice time done each week, it doesn’t matter how many days each week you practice. Practicing more than the required amount is always encouraged and will incr= ease your playing ability and grade. Remember, the more you practice, the better= you will get and the faster you will become better!!!

2.      = A quiet place with good lighting and ventilati= on aids concentrated practice.

3.      = The instrument must be in good mechanical cond= ition. The higher the quality of the instrument and mouthpiece, the higher the possibility of quality sound.

4.      = Isolate the problem spots and work these out. = Do not just start at the beginning every time.

5.      = Identify the problem and come up with a plan to correct it. If it is a note problem, try fingering the part first. If it is= a rhythmic problem, try counting and clapping it or performing it on a single pitch first.

6.      = New material should be practiced first. You sh= ould not play the same songs that you have already mastered every day.

7.      = Short sections of music, a few measures should= be completely worked out at a time. As the saying goes, you eat an entire pizza one piece at a time!

8.      = Slow playing should come before fast playing.<= o:p>

9.      = Avoid boredom!!! Don’t stay on the same = thing too long. Also, try playing something that you like in its entirety each practice session.

10.   Work hard!!! You should work on each aspect of= your playing each session. Play long tones for range, strength, and endurance, w= ork on tonguing, tone production, breathing, work on scales to improve flexibil= ity and technique, etc. Also try and include sight-reading something that you h= ave never played.

11.   Have fun!!! It if starts to drag down, stop an= d take a break. Never let yourself get defeated!

12.   A general breakdown of a practice session shou= ld be as follows:

-Warm-up: breathing exercises, long tones, lip slurs, mouthpiece buzzing, scales in various patterns (5-10 minutes)

-Play something familiar/fun all the way through (5-10 minutes)=

-Work on new material, as described above in #1-4 (25-30 minutes)

-Try sight-reading (5-10 minutes)

-“Cool off” by doing a few more breathing exercises, long tones, etc.

Paren= tal Help and Support

=

To be successful= , your child will need parental support. I would like to offer suggestions of how = you as a parent can help.

1.      = Have patience in repeatedly reminding your chi= ld to do their required practice. Students have a practice record which must be signed by you every week!

2.      = Encouragement when the going gets rough! In mu= sic, as in life, some things are learned easily, while others require intensive = and repeated application. Parental understanding is critical.=

3.      = Albert Einstein once said “Imagination is more important that knowledge.” Knowledge is the transfer of information, but imagination creates things th= at had no prior existence. Never discourage your child’s imagination.

4.      = Common sense is often not so common as we all = know. Avoid undue stress. A balanced schedule of interests into which music and i= ts practice fits as a natural element will pay big personal dividends.

5.      = Be aware of all required rehearsals, concerts,= and days on which your child’s instrument is needed. Of course we want the students to do this on their own and develop as high of a sense of responsibility as possible, but everyone needs an occasional push now and t= hen!

6.      = Praise work well done. A congratulatory remark= may be interjected during a practice session, or later at mealtime. =

7.      = Plan activities ahead, knowing that your child’s participation in rehearsals and concerts is not only required, but most importantly vital to the success of the entire ensemble. Band is a= team as such we must be able to rely upon the other members of our team.

8.      = NEVER USE PRACTICING AS A MEANS OF PUNISHMENT, OR USE BAND AS A TOOL TO IMPROVE ANOTHER AREA OF YOUR CHILD’S LIFE.

9.      = Many parents who do not play a musical instrum= ent feel as though they cannot help their child in correcting problems. In some instances, this may be true, however many times parents can help musically. Also, private lessons gr= eatly help student’s progress. A list of private teachers can be found late= r in this manual. Private lessons also count as practice time, so the lesson time can be deducted from the required amount of practi= ce time at home. <= /p>

Renting New or Slightly Used Instrume= nts

CMS is = serviced by Menchey Music, located in Hanover, Pa. and their newest location on Padonia Road in the Broad Street Market. Menchey offers terrific rent-to-own programs on most band instruments. They rent brand new= and used instruments. A Menchey representative visits the school weekly. Rental forms can be obtained in the Band Room. Once filled out, return it to me wi= th the down payment. I will fax the form to them and they will deliver the instrument to the school within one week. The down payments range from $20-= 60 (depending on the instrument) for the first three months, and then a monthly fee of $26-$70 (again depending on the instrument) until the value of the instrument is paid off at which point you own the instrument. Please note that these instruments are all beginning student models. The models suggest= ed on the previous pages are all intermediate (and up) models. If at any t= ime you wish to return your rental for any reason (including to upgrade to an intermediate instrument), there is no penalty and you make no further payme= nts. In addition, they will pick up the instrument at school at any time if it n= eeds repair and return it to school.

There a= re numerous reasons for upgrading, although the right time to upgrade depends = on various factors such as rate of growth on the instrument, motivation, and commitment. Upgrading is definitely a monetary investment in your childR= 17;s future music education and therefore must be considered carefully before ma= king any decisions. Keeping in mind that a beginner model instrument can only ta= ke a player so far, here are some definite reasons to consider upgrading:

1.&n= bsp;      = Improved technique (hand position and changes in physical development)

2.&n= bsp;      = Response of the instrument as a result of better quality springs, mechanisms, screws, etc.

3.&n= bsp;      = Improved tone quality as a result of better quality materials, bore size and shape (= for example wood instead of plastic, silver instead of lacquer)

4.&n= bsp;      = Better intonation as a result of #2 and #3

5.&n= bsp;      = Performance enhancing features such as certain keys or mechanisms that are not availabl= e on beginner model instruments

6.&n= bsp;      = Acts as a definite motivator in setting goals

7.&n= bsp;      = Rewards the players with a sense of accomplishment (it’s a step towards becom= ing a better, more advanced musician)

8.&n= bsp;      = Builds confidence

9.&n= bsp;      = Students take greater pride in their instruments and themselves, in some cases can improve self image

10.&= nbsp; = The entire band will sound better as a result and as the saying goes, “Su= ccess breeds success”

11.&= nbsp; = The instrument will last well through high school and into college

In some= cases, we understand that purchasing a new intermediate or professional instrument= is not always possible. There are alternatives. If you cannot upgrade instrume= nts, you can upgrade accessories such as a better quality mouthpiece, reed, ligature, etc. This will certainly help the student in the ten reasons abov= e. Of course, students who already play on an intermediate or professional instrument should most definitely play on the upgraded accessories. Since buying a new instrument is such a big step, please contact me ahead of time so I can provide as much assistance as need= ed in helping to choose the right instrument. School Owned Instruments

CMS has= a number of Baltimore County owned instru= ments. They are not always in the best of shape and some are quite old, but playab= le. Baltimore County does however provide us with great quality tubas, baritones, French Horns, bass clarinets, and other large instruments that cannot be easily rented.

&n= bsp;

-        &nbs= p; = The rental fee for a school instrument is $40.00 for the year. If 2 or more students in different grade levels share the same instrument, the rental fee will be split evenly. No one will have to share mouthpieces however.

-        &nbs= p; = Rental contracts can be obtained from me and must be signed and returned before the instrument can be loaned.

-        &nbs= p; = YOU are responsible for proper care of the instrument. Should the instrument get damaged as a result of your carelessness or irresponsibility, you will be responsible for the repair costs.

-        &nbs= p; = The instrument must be returned to school at any time requested.

-        &nbs= p; = When taking it home, make sure it is brought back the very next day if it is sha= red with another student. Causing another student to not have an instrument is grounds to have your rental agreement cancelled with no refund.<= /span>

Instrument Repairs<= /u>

We all = try to be as responsible as possible with our instruments, however from time to ti= me they do need to be repaired. Please follow these steps should your instrume= nt need to be repaired regardless of how minor or serious the damage:

&n= bsp;

1.      = BRING THE INSTRUMENT TO ME FIRST. I am certified to do almost all instrument repairs myself. If I can fix your instrument, there will be no charge and you will get the instrument back wi= thin one day.

2.      = If the repair is beyond my capabiliti= es or if I do not have the proper equipment, I will contact you to make arrangeme= nts. Some music dealers offer free repairs if you bought the instrument from the= m, but it will take some time to get it back and they may or may not offer you= a loaner.

3.      = If all else fails, we will send the instrument to Menchey Music who will repair it for a reasonable price and generally bring a loaner if requested. If your instrument was rented from a music store, you can take it to that store as well after you have brought i= t to me.

4.      = Parental permission is necessary for = me to send out an instrument for repair.

Other Recommended Musical Activities<= o:p>

Baltimore All-Coun= ty Middle School Honor Band

Students currently in Grades 7 or 8 are eligible to audition for the Honor Band. The band is comprised of approximately 90 of the best wind and percussion players from every middle school in Baltimore County. The competition is intense, as many students audition, however being accept= ed is the highest honor you can achieve in the county. If accepted, you will p= erform with the band in a televised gala concert directed by a special guest conductor. Auditioning is a TERRIFIC experience in itself, even if you do n= ot make it, and therefore highly recommended. Audition materials can be picked= up from me anytime and the = auditions take place on Saturday, November 7, 2009 at Loch Raven Academy Middle Scho= ol. The rehearsals/con= cert will take place in early December for those students who are accepted.

Maryland= All-State Junior High Band

Same as above, except the competition is much higher because this is = open to all 7^th, 8^th, and 9^th Graders from every school system in Maryland. The auditions take place= on Saturday, November 14, 2009 (Howard County). The rehearsals/concert will take place in= late February for those accepted.

Baltimore County Solo and Ensemble Festival

This is another terrific opportunity for students in Grades 7 or 8. T= his not an audition however. Students will perform a solo or a small ensemble in front of a professional musician who will evaluate their performance with valuable feedback and an overall rating. The festival takes place on Saturd= ay, February 20, 2010 at Loch Raven Academy Middle School. Stud= ents may see me to choose music anytime between now and January. The sooner you = pick your music, the more time you will have to work on it. Depending on the rat= ing, students may be invited to perform again for the Maryland State Solo and Ensemble Festival on May 15, 2010 at Towson University.

Baltimore County Summer Music Festival

This is a 7 day music camp open to all band students. It is an incred= ible musical opportunity. Students will play in a band at their appropriate grade level with musicians from all over the county. The camp culminates in a gala concert on the last evening. More information and the specific dates will be given out in early spring. If interested, make sure you don’t plan fa= mily vacations for the very end of June.
