CMS Summer Reading Book Projects

Directions: Choose TWO projects that appeal to you. Choose one project for your fiction selection and one project for your non-fiction selection. Feel free to “tweak” = any of the listed ideas to best fit your needs. Both projects will be graded using= the attached rubrics, so be sure to include all required components.=

  1. Create a mini-model of an interesting character/person that plays a significant role in your book. Dress the model to reflect his/her prominent characteristics using any combination of paper, soap, wood, clay, sticks, wire, stones, old toy pieces, or any other materia= ls. A written explanation of how this character/person fits into the book should accompany the sculpture.
  2. Interview a character/person from your book. Write at least ten questions that will give this person the opportunity to disc= uss his/her thoughts and feelings about his/her role in the book.
  3. Write a diary that one of the story's main characters might have kept before, during, or after the book's events. Remember t= hat the character's thoughts and feelings are very important in a diary.
  4. Make 10 sketches of scenes in the book and write capt= ions for each.
  5. Imagine that you are the author of the book you have = just read. Suddenly the book becomes a best seller. Write a letter to a mov= ie producer trying to get that person interested in making your book into= a movie. Explain why the story, characters, conflicts, etc., would make a good film. Suggest a filming location and the actors to play the vario= us roles. YOU MAY ONLY USE BOOKS WHICH HAVE NOT ALREADY BEEN MADE INTO MOVIES. <= o:p>
  6. Write a feature article (with a headline) that tells = the story of the book as it might be found on the front page of a newspape= r in the town where the story takes place. Be sure to include the 5 W’= ;s.
  7. Write a letter (10-sentence minimum) to the main character of your book asking questions, protesting a situation, and/or making a complaint and/or a suggestion. Write in correct letter format= .
  8.  Read th= e same book as one of your friends. The two of you make a video of Masterpiece Book Review, a pr= ogram which reviews books and interviews authors.
  9.  Create = a full-color travel brochure that reflects significant scenery/settings in the book. Captions must be included.
  10.  Write a= full (physical, emotional, relational) description of three characters/peop= le in the book. Draw a portrait to accompany each description.
  11.  Create = an illustrated timeline showing significant events from the   book. Include captions f= or each illustration.
  12.  Create a mini-comic book relating a chapter of the book. Captions must be inclu= ded.
  13.  Create a newspaper for your book. Summarize the plot in one article, cover the weather, etc. in another, and do a feature story on an interesting character.
