National Junior Honor Society

Membership:
The purpose of the National Junior Honor Society is to create enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote leadership, to develop character, and to encourage citizenship.

An academic average of 3.75 or above has to be maintained in order to remain in good standing.

The National Junior Honor Society, Amos/Marfizo Chapter, has established high standards for members and expects them to be upheld not only for school, but also for themselves.

Values and Goals

Leadership:
The student who exercises leadership:

  • Is resourceful in proposing new problems, applying principles, and making suggestions.
  • Demonstrates initiative in promoting school activities.
  • Exercised influence on peers in upholding school ideals.
  • Contributes ideas that improve the civic life of the school.
  • Is able to delegate responsibilities.
  • Exemplifies positive behavior.
  • Inspires positive behavior in others.
  • Demonstrates academic achievement.
  • Successfully holds school positions of responsibility, conducting business effectively and efficiently and without prodding, demonstrates reliability and dependability.
  • Is a forerunner in the classroom, at work, and at school or community activities.
  • Is thoroughly dependable in any responsibility accepted.

Service:
The student who serves:

  • Is willing to uphold scholarship and maintain a loyal school attitude.
  • Participates in some outside activity such as Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, church groups, volunteer services for the aged, poor, or disadvantaged.
  • Volunteers dependable and well-organized assistance, is gladly available, and is willing to sacrifice to offer assistance.
  • Works well with others and is willing to take on responsibilities.
  • Cheerfully and enthusiastically renders requested service to the school.
  • Is willing to represent the class or school in inter-class and inter-scholastic competition.
  • Shows courtesy by assisting visitors, teachers, and students.

Character:
The student of character:

  • Take criticism willingly and accepts recommendations graciously.
  • Consistently exemplifies desirable qualities of behavior (cheerfulness, friendliness, poise, responsibility.)
  • Upholds principles of morality and ethics.
  • Cooperates by complying with school regulations concerning property, programs, office, hall, etc.
  • Demonstrates the highest standards of honesty and reliability.
  • Shows courtesy, concern, and respect for others.
  • Observes instruction and rules, punctuality, faithfulness, both inside and outside the classroom.
  • Maintains powers of concentration and sustained obedience as shown by perseverance and application to studies.
  • Manifests truthfulness in acknowledging obedience to rules, avoiding cheating in written work, and showing unwillingness to profit by the mistakes of others.

  • Juvenile Diabetes Foundation
  • Grant-A-Wish Foundation
  • UNICEF
  • Service Projects for Relay Elementary, Arbutus Middle, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, etc.

The induction into the NJHS is held once a year in the fall. Students are notified of their nomination and need to complete an application that is sent to a review board prior to acceptance.
