What is Service Learning?

Service Learning is school-based participation in organized service projects that meet real needs in the community.  You must complete the Baltimore County Service Learning program to graduate from high school.

Service Learning projects must include preparation, action, and reflection.

Preparation is the first step of service learning in which students work with their teachers and community members to:

  • Identify issues affecting the community: i.e. homelessness, environment, senior citizens, etc.

  • Select project site and type of action.

  •  Plan service learning reflection.

  •  Explore the concept of citizenship.

Action is the next step of service learning in which students carry out their service.

Reflection is the final step of service learning in which students look back on the project and review what they have learned.  Reflection may be done individually (journal or scrapbook) or as a group (class discussion or video of the project).

HOW DO I COMPLETE MY SERVICE LEARNING?

1.       Hours are earned through project completed in the classroom.  Most projects earn 10 service learning credits.  These hours will be recorded on the fourth quarter report card.

2.       Hours can be earned through independent service learning projects, which meet a need in the community.  Examples of projects include:  reading to Kindergarten students or arts & crafts projects with residents of a nursing facility.

All independent service learning projects must be approved by the Service Learning Coordinator in your school BEFORE beginning the service.

Can Awards be earned for independent service?

Meritorious Service Awards can be earned for outstanding independent service learning projects.  Talk to your service learning coordinator for more information.

If you have any questions or would like more information, please talk to the Service Learning Coordinator, Mr. Noll email: anoll@bcps.org.
