ESOL
Science Project
|
Through the generosity of the PTSA, Ms. Coronel's ESOL Science
class was able to raise 23 Painted Lady butterflies starting from
the caterpillar stage. Two weeks after their arrival, the caterpillars
grew into their chrysalide forms. A week later, the butterflies
started coming out! The students fed the butterflies sugar water
sprinkled on carnations and orange slices. After enjoying the
butterflies in the classroom for about two weeks, the students
released the butterflies. Some of the butterflies didn't want
to leave their
"parents" at all!

Through the generosity of the PTSA, Ms.
Coronel's ESOL Science class was able to raise 23 Painted Lady
butterflies starting from the caterpillar stage. These caterpillars
took 7-10 days, from arrival, to get to this size.. |
Approximately fourteen days after arrival,
the caterpillars grew into their chrysalide forms. |

 |
A week after changing into their chrysalid
forms, the butterflies
started coming out! Notice how the wings are not fully "developed"
when a butterfly first comes out. |
When the butterfly first comes out, it stays
in position for about two hours until the wings are fully stretched
out. |
 |
 |
Looks like two hours are up and this butterfly
is ready to fly! |
The students fed the butterflies sugar water
sprinkled on carnations and orange slices.

Ms. Coronel's Period 2 Science class students and the butterflies
they raised. The butterflies were so used to the students that
they didn't want to fly away during Release Day.
