Another eighth place tie nationwide went to Muxin Y. and Cordelia S.. Seventh place nationwide when to Allison S. while

May 2003- DUMBARTON MIDDLE STUDENTS RANK NATIONALLY ON
THE NATIONAL FRENCH EXAM

Well, here we go again. Not only did all 12 of Dumbarton Middle’s Grade 8 French students rank in places 2 through 15 statewide on the National French Exam, but we just received news yesterday that 5 of these students were national winners in the Grand Concours (National French Exam). Yes, you heard correctly! Five of our Grade 8 French I students were ranked nationally.

At a luncheon held on May 18 at Jeannier’s Restaurant in Baltimore City it was announced that Dumbarton Middle School ranked five Grade 8 students of French I in the top ten places in the country. Not county, not state, but country! Those students receiving national ranking in Level IA French out of a total of 18,569 students who took the test nationwide were: Sarah C. and Tasmia R.– tenth place. Ninth place nationwide went to Mary L.. In Level IB French Vera F. placed tenth nationally and Daniel S. placed seventh in the nation. All of these students received medals for their outstanding placement nationwide. This is just another high honor for these five students and for Dumbarton Middle School. Congratulations once again go to Daniel S., Mary L., Tasmia R., Sarah C., and Vera F. on their outstanding academic achievement nationally. We’re sure we haven’t heard the last of your names. Just wait until the Grade 8 Awards Assembly.

FRENCH STUDENTS SOAR
On March 3, 12 students in Grade 8 Level I French at Dumbarton Middle School took the National French Exam, Le Grand Concours. The results for these 12 students were amazing. Placements are done statewide and on the national level. Dumbarton Middle School is proud to announce that all 12 students taking this national exam placed between 2nd and 15th place statewide. Yes, that’s right, statewide! The results are as follows. Remember, these are statewide rankings:

In Level I-B (For students who have one parent who speaks French)
4th - Daniel S.
7th - Vera F.

The Dumbarton dozen beat out their counterparts from private and parochial schools such as Friends, Garrison Forest, St. Pauls’ Schools, The National Cathedral School, Georgetown Preparatory, the Severn School, Charles E. Smith Jewish School, Gaithersburg Middle School, the Woods Academy, and Harford Day School.
The National French Exam is a very difficult exam as it involves tremendous amounts of vocabulary, grammar, listening, and reading skills beyond the student’s level of French. To have one student placed on a high level statewide is an accomplishment, but to have all 12 students ranked in the top 15 statewide is a very high honor for those students and Dumbarton Middle School.
The scores of Mary L., Tasmia R., Sarah C., Daniel S., and Vera F. will be sent to the national level for further consideration and honors. Let’s keep our fingers crossed for more recognition and kudos on that level. Mary L., Tasmia R. and Sarah C. will be invited to a luncheon at Jeannier’s in downtown Baltimore on May 18 where they will receive additional recognition and honors. In addition, we’re hoping to have these students recognized by the Board of Education, the Sunpapers, Towson Times, and the Office of World Languages in Baltimore County.
Once again, Mr. Scannell would like to congratulate all 12 students taking part in the National French Exam for the high honor they have brought to themselves, their families, and their school. They are truly an integral part of what makes Dumbarton Middle School an outstanding place to learn and grow. Vive le francais et ses élèves!
