Frequent 5th Grader Questions, Answered by HMS StudentsThis section is designed for fifth grade students who will be entering Hereford Middle School and have questions about the school. The section covers a wide range of topics. It is suggested that you view all the questions and answers in order to gain the most information. The questions were submitted by fifth grade students that visited HMS. Answers were provided by HMS sixth grade students.
-Yes, you so get to choose some of your specials, like which music class you prefer. The rest of the classes are core classes that are sixth grade requirements.
-For the first couple of weeks, you will sit with your homeroom until everyone becomes familiar with the cafeteria and its routines. Then, you will earn free seating as long as everyone is obeying the rules of the cafeteria.
-Lunch currently costs $2.20.
-The dress code at Hereford Middle requires you to wear no clothing that makes references to drugs, alcohol, etc. There should be no undergarments showing, and no midriffs showing as well. Shorts and skirts should be the length of your arm, all the way down to your fingertips if you were to let them hang down next to you. Hats are not to be worn in school. Flip-flops and slip-on shoes are allowed.
-The morning announcements will tell you where and when to sign up for particular after school clubs and activities.
-All you need to do is find a teacher to sponsor it, and then with their approval and help, you can form your own club.
–If you get lost and are late to class the first week or two, do not worry. The teachers are very understanding. There are plenty of students, teachers and staff to help you locate your destination. It will not be long before you are an expert!
-The best advice is to write your combination down somewhere secret in your belongings, so that you can retrieve it easily in a pinch. Your teacher will also be able to help. Buy your combination locks early and practice during the summer.
-Yes, you can, but at YOUR OWN RISK. Cell phones must be turned off and left in your locker at all times.
-There is no bell that rings between classes. It is up to the teachers to dismiss you at the appropriate times.
-A school day starts at 7:40 and ends at 2:05.
-Each class is 50 minutes in length.
-You will usually have 7 teachers a day, but on the A/B system in place, you may have up to 8 teachers total.
-You will receive a map with all of the bus stops. Someone on the staff will help you find your bus in the afternoon.
-There are 7 periods a day. You have five minutes to get to your next class.
-Yes. You use your planner as your hall pass to use the bathroom. Your teacher will sign the planner and then you are free to go.
- There are about 1,000 students at Hereford Middle School.
-YES!
-In sixth grade, you should have about one hour, but that will fluctuate a little more and a little less depending on projects, tests, etc.
-Yes. Many weekends you will have assignments to complete.
-Just remember the 3x2 rule. You can check out 3 books at a time and keep them out for 2 weeks.
-A and B days really refer to your specials. On A days, you have certain specials, and on B days, you have different specials. A and B days alternate every day.
-Yes, there are showers, and no, you do not have to take one, but you might feel better if you do on hot days!
-A gym uniform costs $20.00.
-You have gym 5 times a week. Yes, that means everyday!
-Imagine life with no more lines and no more line leaders! You will be free to walk the halls on your own, and use your inside voices while moving from class to class.
