Through individual counseling, classroom guidance and group counseling School Counselors address the academic, career decision making and social/emotional needs and success of all students.  As School Counselors we are governed by the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) in accordance with the National Standards for School Counselors

What is a School Counselor?

*      a certified, specially trained, and caring person.

*      a school person who helps all students.

*      a coordinator

*      a consultant

*      a group leader

*      a mediator

*      a person who helps teacher, adults, and parents understand children.

*      a person who helps children understand themselves.

What Does a School Counselor Do? 

*      Talks with students individually-and in groups

*      Helps in identifying the needs of students

*      Orients new students

*      Promotes positive attitudes and values among students

*      Aids teachers and parents in helping children

*      Helps people to make better use of community resources

*      Assists in the identification of and referrals for crisis situations.

*      Helps with school, college, job, career, and personal plans.

*      Assists students in the maturation process.

*      Maintains student confidences.

*      Changes in student behavior

*      Academic advising

*      Scheduling a team meeting

*      Academic placement concerns

*      Social or personal concerns

*      Make-up work (if out more than 3 days)

*      self-referral (guidance pass required)

*      appointment made by counselor

*      parent referral

*      administrative referral

*      teacher or other staff referral

*      referral by friends
