SPMS Schoolwide
Summer Reading Project 2007
Purpose: Reading
for pleasure is extremely effective in promoting
literacy. Summer reading promotes reading as a
leisure activity, increases reading comprehension,
fluency, and vocabulary, as well as reduces the usual
summer reading learning loss.
Rationale: Summer
reading is a valuable experience for all students and
an important extension of all educational
programs. Studies have shown that children who
continue to read during the summer perform better in
the fall when school resumes. Reading is one of
the most important factors in academic success, a
skill that is basic to all areas of the curriculum,
and a skill that improves with practice. Summer
reading helps to keep students connected to learning
during the summer, contributes to student achievement,
and is an important component of the goal of every
student becoming a life-long reader and learner.
