SPMS Schoolwide
Summer Reading Project 2007

Purpose:  Reading for pleasure is extremely effective in promoting literacy.  Summer reading promotes reading as a leisure activity, increases reading comprehension, fluency, and vocabulary, as well as reduces the usual summer reading learning loss.

Rationale:  Summer reading is a valuable experience for all students and an important extension of all educational programs.  Studies have shown that children who continue to read during the summer perform better in the fall when school resumes.  Reading is one of the most important factors in academic success, a skill that is basic to all areas of the curriculum, and a skill that improves with practice.  Summer reading helps to keep students connected to learning during the summer, contributes to student achievement, and is an important component of the goal of every student becoming a life-long reader and learner.

Read a novel from the 2007-2008 Black-Eyed Susan List (see attached link).  Then complete one of the activities below.

Option A: Newspaper Article

Pretend you are a writer for a newspaper.  Report on the major event of your novel.  Include the who, what, when, where, why and how.  Also, include quotes from at least 3 characters that you "interview" for the article.  Don't forget a catchy headline.

The article must be at least 1and 1/2 pages long (handwritten).  You must submit a final draft of the newspaper article, revised and edited for spelling and other mistakes.

Option B: Poster

Make a poster advertising the novel you read.  Include the title, author, and a brief summary (at least two paragraphs).  Don't give away the ending!  Your poster should be neat, attractive to the eye, and edited for spelling and other mistakes.

Grading:

This assignment is worth 50 extra credit points in your language arts or Language! class.  You will also be invited to an ice cream social hosted by Principal Foley!

Homeroom teachers will collect all assignments through September.
