STRIVE FOR |
Dear Readers, Our goal is to read 25 books during the school year! I challenge all my readers to complete their list of titles and review at least 5 of their favorite books! The other 20 you will need a reader's response in order to receive credit. This is a great way to recommend other books to your peers and get the recognition you deserve for being well read! I know that we have MANY students who have already reached this goal and we are not even at the 1/2 way mark in our school year. Please stop by the library for your reading log and reader response sheets! I look forward to seeing your name and picture in the library showcase! |
Freedom to Read
|
Support Intellectual Freedom! Celebrate the freedom to READ and checkout a challenged book; see what all the fuss is about! Some of our shelves most beloved tales appear on the very long list of forbidden books. The only thing dangerous about books, is not reading them. We need to protect our Intellectual Freedom and always remember that Free People Read Freely! |
If you are looking for a fabulous series checkout Bloody_Jack by L. A. Meyer. I am pleased to announce that the Bloody Jack Series is the second most popular book checked out at SMMS! Go Jacky! *The seventh book, Rapture of the Deep: Being an Account of the Further Adventures of Jacky Faber, Soldier, Sailor, Mermaid, Spy was just released! It was not my favorite but still a good read! |

Welcome Murasaki!
|
Please welcome our new Raven Mascot, Murasaki Shikibu, to our library family! She joins Schmeagle the Eagle and Shawan the Wise Owl! Murasaki is the Japanese word for Purple. She is named after Lady Murasaki, the Japanese novelist, poet, and maid of honor of the imperial court during the Heian period. She is best known as the author of The Tale of Genji, written in Japanese between 1000 and 1008, and known as the world's first novel. She loves READING... matter of fact, she can't stop "RAVEN" about it! |

Students Receive Award from Scholastic’s Kids Are Authors Book Contest! To celebrate and educate others about diversity, a group of student authors from Sudbrook Magnet Middle created a collection of vignettes to complete a book entitled Don’t Judge This Book. The book’s title was inspired by the American Proverb “don’t judge a book by its cover”. This tender, insightful book sends a powerful message that will enlighten others about people and their cultural background. It illustrates that each and every student has a unique story and should not be judged but embraced for their differences. Each student wrote an autobiographical vignette. The book’s bright expressive colors were created by student illustrator, Linda Wu. The lesson originally stemmed from a project that the students completed in their Facing History and Ourselves Seminar; creating children’s books on how stereotypes prevent others from seeing people as individuals. The students work was so inspiring that we entered it in the Scholastic’s National Kids Are Authors contest. The collaboration proved to be an amazing experience for all involved and the book was an Honorable Mention Winner and received a $500 gift certificate from Scholastic. Only 25 books receive this honor out of thousands of entries. All the participating students celebrated a book signing and reception in the school library! Many thanks to Ms. Coronel for her hard work and dedication and to all the fabulous student authors... Thank you for being YOU! |
