SUDBROOK MAGNET MIDDLE SCHOOL

A MISSION STATEMENT

The mission of Sudbrook Magnet Middle School (SMMS) will be to provide its students with programs in the Environmental and Earth Sciences, Performing Arts, Visual Arts, and World Languages. SMMS is a total magnet school. Students who express an interest and demonstrate commitment to intensive exploration of one of the four magnets areas will be considered for admission. Preference will be given to students who reside within the old SMMS boundaries. SMMS will offer a comprehensive middle school program consistent with the Board Of Education’s middle school policy. SMMS’s academic program will be responsive to the full range of young adolescents’ developmental, intellectual, emotional, and physical needs.

SMMS students and staff will be expected to demonstrate high levels of commitment to expand educational opportunities. SMMS will be a school where talent is not just identified, but is developed. What distinguishes SMMS from community middle schools are the intensive exploratory programs which will allow students to focus on their specific areas of talent and interest. A student who comes to SMMS to pursue an interest will also benefit from the other three magnet programs. For example, the student who comes to SMMS to explore Environmental and Earth Sciences will be able to participate in performances because there is a Performing Arts Magnet, take Japanese because there is World Languages, and experiment with computer animation because there is a Visual Arts Magnet. The importance of developing a healthy lifestyle is reflected in the requirement that all students take a course in health.

Throughout its programs, academic and exploratory, there will be an emphasis on critical thinking and collaborative problem solving with enhanced opportunities to use technology as a learning tool in virtually every classroom and learning space in the building.
