Creature Research

The Fellowship of the Ring

Research Scenario

The novel The Fellowship of the Ring is regarded as one of the most influential books ever written in the modern fantasy genre. The most intriguing elements of the novel are the fantasy characters or creatures that were created by the author J.R.R. Tolkien. “Frodo”, a hobbit and “Gandolf the Grey”, a wizard, are just a few of these beloved characters. While Tolkien favored the elves as his favorite beings, he was best associated with acting more like a grouchy hobbit in real life. He once stated "I am in fact a Hobbit, in all but size". Each creature had distinct personality traits and unique characteristics based on the authors' vision of middle-earth.

To better understand the novel and its fantasy elements, you will investigate a topic related to one the characters/creatures in the novel. Your research should enable you to answer the following question:

How does an understanding of the fantasy characters in The Fellowship of the Ring enhance your comprehension of the novel?

Task & Product

Your task will be to work with a group to research one aspect of Tolkien’s fantasy characters. Your group will use the information from your research to create a visual about your research topic for a guidebook which will be used by your classmates to enhance their understanding of the novel. The type of visual guide that you will create will relate to your particular topic area:

  • Elves
  • Dwarves
  • Hobbits
  • Dragons
  • Orcs
  • Wizards
You will act both as an individual researcher and as a member of a team to produce a guidebook on your creature. After conducting research individually, each team member will share his/her findings with the rest of the team. Team members will then work together to prepare a page in the guidebook. All team members must do individual research and participate in team planning, production, and presentation of the display.

Assessments

The following scoring tools may be used or adapted by your teacher to evaluate your research process and your guidebook. You will be graded on your daily work on the research process as well as on your final product and presentation.
