Author Study 7th --8th Grade GT

Language Arts and Library/Tech Classes

 

            Beginning today, you will be working from school, home and/or public library computers to create bulletin boards on authors you have studied and the books they have written.

 

Objective for Library Media:  Students will create large bulletin board displays on a literary author of their choice (with prior media specialist approval) in order to promote reading, literature and literary experiences.

 

Pre-requisite skills/review:

o        What is an author study and why do we need them? Biography?  Obstacles?  Overcoming obstacles? Best sellers?  Awards?  Future books?

o        Why read more than one book by a particular author?

o        How to perform a meaningful search on the Internet?

o        How to create documents and graphics in Word and other applications, saving, editing (cut, copy and paste) and printing them

o        Saving and retrieving documents at the STUDENT SHARE DRIVE

 

Final Assignment Due Date:  The first of each month.  Example:

o        Main Hallway and Library Media Center:  Oct. 1, 2005:     ---2  main boards available in the glass showcases

                                                                 ---2 main boards available in the Library Media Center

                                                            ---1 Extra Large bulletin board available outside the LMC

 

Due today:  Ms. Chambers will check your personal STUDENT SHARE DRIVE folder to see work you have found on a particular author.  Please have at least one to two authors selected Day 1.

 

Bulletin board size:  See Ms. Chambers to get a yardstick to measure the bulletin board you wish to work on.  Also use rubric(s) to review and guide you!

 

Where to save your notes on your author and your board:  Save to your personal STUDENT SHARE DRIVE folder.  Ms. Chambers will check on Mon., Wed., Fri. afternoon of each week.

o       With special permission from Ms. Chambers, 2 or 3 students may work together, but EACH must save ALL of her/his work to her/his SHARE DRIVE

 

  • By end of 3rd computer/media visit:  Select an author to study, do an Internet search and save work (notes and websites) on that author to your personal STUDENT SHARE DRIVE folder. 
    • Save some work each visit. 
    • I will check and provide feedback on Mon., Wed., and Fri.,

 

  • By end of 4th computer/media visit:  Please create a layout of your bulletin board design. 
    • You may use Word
    • You may use other Microsoft Applications that produce art products

 

  • By end of 6th computer/media visit:  You should have feedback as to whether you can print in color in
    • You will also know which items to print
    • You will also know which bulletin board may use your
    • You will also have a post date for taking down materials already there and replacing with your bulletin board
    • Save all work you take down and label with student’s name---per manila envelops in Ms. Chambers’ library office
  • I will use the same rubric for my final feedback
  • Review the RUBRIC often, as you will be rubric scoring your own.
  • I will post your final Bulletin Board Display grade to your personal share drive folder upon completion of this unit

Share Drive: 

·         Check the OPEN student share drive each time you come in for the daily assignment

·         Find your own personal share drive file (use your password to enter) and work on your Bulletin Board Display, SAVE YOUR WORK with each visit

·         Return to your personal share file with each visit.  As GT students, you will be working via “guided independent study” online.
