YEARLY EVENTS OVERVIEW
Below you will find an overview of some of the yearly events that Maiden Choice School has planned. Please check your child’s communication book for memos & invitations, the school’s monthly newsletter (Maiden Voyage), and the Baltimore County Public Schools Calendar for current dates and details. If you would like more information about an event please contact the school.

  • BACK TO SCHOOL DAY: Occurs in September. Parents/guardians/primary care providers are encouraged to visit their child’s classroom to meet the teacher and learn about the classroom routines. This is a great time to get involved.
  • AMERICAN EDUCATION WEEK: Occurs during the third week in November. This weeklong event encourages parents/guardians/ primary care providers and community members to become active participants in their child’s education.
  • HOMECOMING DANCE: Occurs the third Friday in November, the last day of American Education Week. This is an annual evening gala-event that embraces the past graduates of Maiden Choice School. Current high school aged students are also invited to attend.
  • FALL DANCE: Occurs during the fall Season. This is a school wide daytime event that celebrates the season of fall with refreshments, music, & dancing.
  • WINTER FUN FEST: Occurs during the month of December. The Winter Fun Fest is an annual fund raising event that encourages staff, students, families and community members to become more involved with our school. Crafts, foods, gifts, and seasonal photos are sold to raise funds for student activities.
  • WINTER PROGRAM: Occurs during the month of December. The Winter Program is an annual themed event, which provides opportunities to showcase our student’s musical talents and abilities. All students participate in at least one of the programs each year in which both music and learned classroom skills are highlighted.
  • WINTER DANCE: Occurs during the winter season. This is a school wide daytime event that celebrates the season of winter with refreshments, music, & dancing.
  • SPRING SHOW: Occurs during the spring season. The Spring Program is an annual themed event, which provides opportunities to showcase our student’s musical talents and abilities. All students participate in at least one of the programs each year in which both music and learned classroom skills are highlighted.
  • SPRING DANCE: Occurs during the spring season. This is a school wide daytime event that celebrates the season of spring with refreshments, music, & dancing.
  • GRADUATION: Occurs in the spring at the end of the school year, in the Maiden Choice School gymnasium. The ceremony includes a formal Pomp & Circumstance entrance, and each graduate individually receives a Maryland State Certificate of Completion and a Maiden Choice School pin. Parents, guardians, peers, and special guests are invited to attend. Guest speakers are often from the community and speak about special education/transitioning issues. The ceremony ends with a reception outside under tents or in case of inclement weather, in the library.
  • PROM: Occurs in the spring at the end of the school year. The Prom celebrates the current graduates and their peers. The event changes from year to year, occurring on or off school grounds, according to parent and staff survey results. The daytime event includes refreshments, music, and dancing.
  • PLAYDAY: Occurs in the spring at the end of the school year. Playday is a daylong series of activities that involve every student and staff in the school. Some of the activities include faculty/student games and relays. The PTA provides a pizza lunch for everyone.
  • BAY BUDDIES: Occurs during the summer break, usually in August. Bay Buddies is a one-week summer camp program that features experiential activities such as sailing, therapeutic horseback riding, crafts, a planting project, and field trips in the Baltimore Harbor area. It combines teachers and assistants from Maiden Choice, who provide knowledge of the child with instructors from the Living Classrooms Foundation, who develop and provide a variety of exciting activities. The Arc of Baltimore and Baltimore County Recreation and Parks help to provide funding for the program.
  • EXTENDED SCHOOL YEAR (ESY) PROGRAM: Occurs during the summer break, and follows the BCPS Summer School calendar. Students’ eligibility for participation in the ESY program is determined during IEP Team meetings.
  • CAMP: Occurs during the summer break, and follows the BCPS Summer School calendar. Maiden Choice Camp is sponsored by the Arbutus Recreation and Parks Office and the Baltimore County Office of Therapeutic Recreation Services. It offers five weeks of fun for campers with special needs. Activities include indoor and outdoor games, great arts and crafts, music, movies, weekly theme parties, and a huge barbecue/picnic to which everyone is invited. In addition we will have several professional entertainment groups visit our camp. Caring and experienced personnel staff Maiden Choice Camp.
    VACATION/BREAKS: These days occur throughout the school year. Please refer to the Baltimore County Public Schools calendar below for specific dates.
